Resource Grab

<div class="IPBDescription">Game mode idea.</div>Here's perhaps a bit of an old idea from an old game, anyone remember bag man from kingpin?

Basically theres one or more central points where money falls from that players from each team fight to collect, they take what they can back to their base and store it in a safe, each team can steal from the safe and kill the players carrying back money which drops and can be collected.

I've wanted to see something like this game mode in a game for years and think it could work in ns2, replacing money with some other resource collectible, it would probably need to work a bit differently but the basic idea is a fun one i think, perhaps even in an mvm scenario but theres no reason why it couldn't be done with aliens and marines.

Haha, I've always been a fan of the idea that marines, buildings, aliens, etc. explode into collectible resources, like those old-school platformers.

This could be really interesting, remove all techpoints (except for starting positions ofc), and make resnodes spit resources every x second/min/whatever (thereby also removing harvesters for both sides).

So, players then have to go to resnodes and take res, and run back to CC/hive to turn it in, this gives the comm res to build all buildings and research upgrades.

I forgot all about this thread over Christmas but i would still love to see this created some day, hopefully as part of a bigger game mode mod like the combat mod.

I just found an old <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9Lf0zuc3u4" target="_blank">youtube vid</a> which shows off kingpin's bag man mode, obviously for NS2 it would look quite a bit different and would be improved but the basic idea is a fun one i think.

Twiggeh has the right idea, although im unsure if it should involve commanders and base building but we could perhaps have two modes a bit like we have now with classic and combat.

Anyway here's the basic game rules i think the combat version would have, its open to suggestions of course.

<ul><li>Each team has just their starting techpoint.</li><li>No base building or expansion.</li><li>Combat style upgrades based on points gained from kills, stealing and resources returned to base.</li><li>Resources are spat out from two random resnodes, changing every 5 minutes or so.</li><li>Players can steal enemy resources, either from individual enemy players or their base.</li><li>A reasonable but limited carrying capacity, so if you're stealing from a base you can't take it all.</li></ul>
The resources could be something like small crystals, perhaps two different shapes and colours to represent different values like 2r and 5r, this just adds a bit of variety, each team will battle for and collect from the two resource producing resnodes, players can either just try gathering small amounts and returning to base or they can try killing and stealing from the enemy, there will be some indication of how much players are carrying so you know who's worth targeting.

Remember you get upgrades from points gained, you don't use up the actual resources, they are produced throughout the game and exist until the round ends, the team with the most wins, so stealing could become quite important if the enemy teams gains a big lead.

I would love to hear what people think and any suggestions or improvements you have, i really hope to see something like this again as i remember it being incredibly fun!

For one it sounds like a lot of fun. Maybe better suited for a marine vs marine game-play?...maybe?

I would imagine the blood from being hit could be replaced with shrapnel or even a custom "money" model or decal that would be easy and small (size wise) to do.

Great idea and the whole upgrade system is already figured out for the most part with the combat mod in progress.

    +1

Yeah you're probably right it might work better with mvm, although you never know, it would be interesting to see how it plays with aliens, i imagine they could get in and out quicker and stuff vs marines.

Possibly another gametype for combat mode? I am already looking at how to include resource nodes so that there's a central objective. I would imagine it's not that much work to go the extra step and have personal resources (we already have that anyway with plasma).

Thinking that I will add a combat_gametype console command to allow you to choose which mode you play combat in. If anyone wants to have a play at implementing this, just fork the combat github tree and that'll give you a good headstart. (If you implement it right we might be able to put the resulting code changes straight back into Combat!)

Hope you don't mind me reviving this old thread, i just remembered it and think it would be great if you're still interested in doing something like this? :D

A few more possible names, Resource Rush, Res Rush, Res...

Sounds fun. Let the Nanite hunt begin!

How hard would this be to code?

Id really like to see a few more game modes other than standard and combat, maybe this will work maybe not but would be interesting to see how it plays...

I haven't looked at the NS2 code, but this sounds relatively easy to implement.

I'd personally keep the normal gameplay but then make people retrieve resources (by hand) from the nodes. You could have one central node but that would probably be too much of a cluster :)

I'm tempted to try my hand at this myself but I feel discouraged by the idea of empty servers... (not to mention I have no server to host this on).

I guess both types of game play could work but the resource grab needs to be the main objective to win, it might be asking a bit much to have players collecting and trying to expand at the same time, the maps are pretty big, it might work this is why id like to see what happens, i think it has potential if done right.

It's a still early days but mods will become more active as time goes on, most of the combat and other mod servers become full at some point, i don't think this will have trouble as long as it works.
