<div class="IPBDescription">Requires wine?!</div>Just bought NS2 for my friend and I, and was going to set up a dedicated server for our community. The dedicated server we have colocated is running Ubuntu 10.10 (should be 10.04, but that's another story) and is headless, and we don't have X installed. The wiki says I have to run steam through wine. This isn't an optino for us. Is this really the only way to run NS2 Dedicated Server?

currently not. There is a server, maybe even a server planned, but not released yet. Since the code should not change too much between linux and windows they try to concentrate on fixing the windows server first.

The Linux server is planned, but not on the current agenda since progressing the game development has a priority for now, and I wouldn't expect this to change soon.
So for now a Windows server or Linux with Wine is the only option.

The only way to run the server, for now, is using wine or your favourite VM because is a windows only server.

Steam is only required, for now, to update the server files. It is also planed to use HLS... (whatever is the name), so you'll not need steam for the server.
The linux server will see light more ahead on the development, for now we have what we have.
