Cause even @ the current highest in game, it looks bad, and games from 2003 had better Flamethrowers.

Yeah, i assume it is since atm its just cheap spritework..

Later on i believe UWE will implement some particle effect for the flamer, tho there's more pressing matters at hand right now.

I think they're waiting for the new LUA FX system to be implemented.

Alright, just making sure, cause it stood out so badly I don't want to use the flamethrower, it just doesn't fit with the rest of the high quality work.

A tad irrelevant, but is the egg model also a placeholder? I noticed that it has a lot of holes, where you can actually see through the model.

No, the effect is using particles, not cheap spritework. Yes the flamethrower effect is still a work in progress and it will be improved. One of the biggest things left to do with it is to get to the flame to lag behind as you swing it around.

The egg is not placeholder. But it is meant to have a semi transparent/translucent membrane, so you will be able to see inside it and see the glowing embryo swimming around in the middle of it. That type of transparency for models has not been implemented in the code yet, though, but when it is, many of the alien structures have already been designed, modeled and textured to take advantage of it. So, anyway, that will probably make those holes less noticeable, but we may still need to patch a few of the holes up.

The transparency looks amazing, btw. I can't wait 'til that's implemented. You can check it out at: http://www.artisaverb.info (technically renders)

I was admiring the flame effect in NS2HD videos and it's actually really good, it just needs some realism added to it where it's not acting as a big long flaming stick but actually flaming fluid that trails behind. If you look at other games that use more dynamic flame, it looks cool to leave objects burning but the flame themselves don't look too real. Look at BFBC2 Vietnam, the flame look weird...

Flame and water are just those two things that are hard to get right in a graphics engine.

It's not the physics that are the problem, the flames are just way too bright and cartoony looking right now IMO.
