there where a few threads like this. But it seems that there is just no interest in ns1 maps (quite sadly actually, i would love to play eclipse)

I recreated a co_ map and while back. I then promptly deletedeleted it.
The map I am working on at the moment includes some "quotes" from favourite Ns1 maps.

Dunno if anyone has made a port of any ns maps, though.

That's odd. I expected at least one or two maps being worked on. I know NS2 plays differently, but to be honest I don't see why 4 tech point maps wouldn't work. And even if they didn't it shouldn't be too hard to add a fifth one, at least on some maps. I'm not a mapper though. Is there a good reason why it's not being done?

Making a map is a lot of work and I'd guess that most people would rather work on their own creations. There is also the issue of copyrights.

As I said, I am including several areas from Ns1 maps in the one I am working on. Unfortunately, I don't have the best track record with regards to finishing my maps, so you may never see the results.

If anyone is interested in working with me to recreate an Ns1 map, please contact me via pm.

I've always tossed around the idea of ns2_nancy but until I finish ns2_icarus I don't plan on it.

You're right, wanting to create your own maps first is a valid reason. And copyright might matter when you want the map to have a chance to become "official".

There's no copyright issue. NS1 and NS2 is designed by the same company.

Right, my bad. I used copyright but ment intellectual property. Not as in "omg I'll sue you!" but more as in, it isn't cool to "rip off" oher peoples design wholesale without asking (and getting) their permission.

I am aware that the maps probably fall within UWE's IP but there is still the original creator to consider, imo.

That, and we don't have all of the right textures for the rebuilds. The textures would have to be updated, re designed, re applied, and it would take the designer MORE time than wanted to complete this... I mean don't get me wrong, it would be fun, but a long process.

Bast is quite possible out of the current set of stuff. Although you would like to unique it up.

NS2 without ns_stargate_xt won't be complete. Someone has to remake it. :>

It's not a remake but im currently working on a fairly realistic stargate map at the moment, will be something close to the show in design with all the necessary areas and vents to make it a fully playable map, it will probably take place all in the sgc but if i can make the gate work in the future i may have one that goes off world as well.

Magneto, I wouldn't do it if I were you. Copyright issues.
• MagnetoMagneto Join Date: 2010-12-22 Member: 75856Members
I don't think its an issue, im pretty sure if its free and just a recreation its considered fair use, plus many games have at some point had stargate maps and mods and i've never heard them having legal problems.
• UncleRayUncleRay Join Date: 2010-03-08 Member: 70881Members
Yeah, but still... We don't need a stargate map.. It's not cool dude lol
• MagnetoMagneto Join Date: 2010-12-22 Member: 75856Members
I don't understand where you're coming from?

Im sure many here love stargate along with other shows and locations that could become maps, i personally get bored of games with no variety outside of a certain theme, whats the point in mapping if we can't create what we like?

I think if done right it could work well as a map considering the layout and style of the underground base, i would hate to see limits on creativity within the community because a few dislike variety.

I think the problem was that it was a very ugly and ill-thought out map with the professional finesse of a siege mapper.
• MagnetoMagneto Join Date: 2010-12-22 Member: 75856Members
Yeah some of the old ns maps were quite ugly i agree, perhaps i should have been more clear as i guess i did post in an ns1 map thread, my map will take advantage of all the potential spark has and should be quite true to the show with all the necessary details, not a boxy low detail odd layout map like we have seen before, also it's the only thing im working on and probably won't be out until the game is, so it should be quite good.

I have no problem with the mechanism in the map but I don't like the mixing of IPs.

You don't need to make a clone of rockdown to be within the NS IP. Look at the diversity of maps in the past. From veil to metal to mineshaft to ayumi, every one was unique but firmly within the NS universe.

Let him make a Smurfs map for all I care. Don't like a certain map? Don't play it. Problem solved.

It's nice to encourage a bit of quality design visually and gameplay wise rather than ending up with a load of greyboxed killboxes or in this community, a la siege maps.
• MagnetoMagneto Join Date: 2010-12-22 Member: 75856Members
Im unsure whether you're all talking in general or not now but i just want to be clear i only brought it up because someone mentioned stargate, from the start i had no intention of creating any ns1 maps, i just like stargate and think it could make for a decent map if done right.
• ThaldarinThaldarin Alonzi! Join Date: 2003-07-15 Member: 18173Members, Constellation
Gameplay wise it probably will not and ever be the best. However, if you put effort in to designing it, instead of making it as craptastic, visually unappealing and make it so the gameplay is no where near as bad as the original, you won't be half bad.

Just take inspiration from it and make a 'real' map based on the Cheyenne complex, it's not original no, but by all means, take the time to do it properly and not rush out something boxy, badly textured, badly lit. So make a real go of it, instead of half-hearting it, if you get me? :)
• MagnetoMagneto Join Date: 2010-12-22 Member: 75856Members
Yeah like i said its got nothing to do with any ns1 map thats stargate based or otherwise, as you mentioned it will be based on the cheyenne complex, with details as close to real as the tv show but i will have to make up some of the layout beyond a certain area as we never quite get a perfect idea of how the place fits together so expect some rooms to be in different places and on the same level.

What is your gameplayness measure? Whether you like/don't like it? If I get to make it (untextured "sketch") I won't even remotely care if you like it. If you don't, join a different server. And really I'm not interested in how you'll explain how it was all bad, non-classic or siegeish or whatever.

I'd like to remake a co_ map that was vertical, i believe it was called co_freefall but i cant find the original map and pretty much the only thing i remember is there were at least 3 levels and it was quite small x and y wise

I miss that map :(

I'd like to see how ns2 plays on maps that are the same visual complexity as ns1 maps.
