Jetpack - sound effect (ideas/thoughts)

What are peoples thoughts on what the new jetpack should sound like?

Should it be similar to NS1 sound effect?

Something more futuristic (magnetic hum, low rumble, ect...)?

Something closer to a rocket engine?

Compressed air?

( ^ Just basic examples of course, please add your own !)

I know the dev team might have already designed a jetpack model (and sound effect), which would effect what would sound appropriate or not.

Still.....
give your input...

I don't mind so much what the sound is like (perhaps not too loud or mechanical, just a light noticable thing).

But the movement could be improved, it was pretty bad in NS1.

Check out Tribes that was designed on jetpacks (10 year old game now), but the movement (albiet its open doors, NS2 is closed doors) should give you an idea on how it should work in that area, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbvqdRl40FI#t=1m

Always hated NS's jetpack because it just made you hit the roof and scrape along it, not smooth or that fun at all.

I also think that the sound effect is secondary, as long as the Jetpack does not sound like a vacuum cleaner. :P

The Jetpack should provide a certain amount of lift by default while in mid air IMO, so the marine piloting it should never fall like a rock, but rather "swim" in the air. Since NS2 maps will be predominantly feature indoor environment, the upward thrust of the Jetpack should be gentler to make it more maneuverable.

If the jetpack provided upward acceleration, rather than constant upward velocity, it would be not only more realistic, but easier and more interesting to maneuver. So for example, if gravity is set at -9.8 m/s/s, give jetpack an upward acceleration of +14.7 when active, and +4.9 when passive. What this would effectively mean is that a jetpack user would have an upward acceleration of 4.9 when active, and a downward acceleration of 4.9 when passive. You could add a third condition (tied to crouch) where you would cut the jet completely and fall like a rock. And a fourth condition (tied to sprint) where you would in fact just hover in mid air. Each mode would consume fuel appropriately.

    Summary:
Crouch: +0 acceleration, 0 jetpack fuel consumption
no modifiers: +4.9 acceleration, 1/3 standard jetpack fuel consumption
Sprint: +9.8 acceleration, 2/3 standard jetpack fuel consumption
Jump: +14.7 acceleration, standard jetpack fuel consumption

Jetpack horizontal movement could just be set at maybe marine sprint speed (while in the air).

Just realised sprint wouldn't technically make you hover, just cause your vertical velocity to be constant. If your vertical velocity was already zero then yeah it would make you hover.

i've actually been messing about creating some jetpack movement code/mod Harimau i can give you link to it if you want experiment

Yeah, that'd be great, thanks. I was considering trying a jetpack mod after writing that post, but I didn't know where to start. Your foundation will definitely make it easier to experiment. I don't have a strong programming background (the most programming I've done is MATLAB scripting for my engineering course, and some C for a semester in first-year), but I'm pretty good at picking things up as I go.

Give thoughts only on the sound effects for the jetpack in this thread please. :p
    Interesting points though
