Is it just me?

Or am I missing something here....
I'm assuming I can't be alone in this process so thought id see if maybe my setup was different in anyway compared with a wider audience.

Since the beta begun my computers always been able to run the game without a problem bar one thing.
I have a ping of 46 yet I'm jolting around the screen like I have a ping of 4000. The game looks awesome but its very jumpy and it doesn't matter which server I'm on (UK/US etc) I get the same issue each time.

Setup:

3 x LG E2240S LED Widescreens

Resolution: 1920x1080

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate

CPU: i5 Quad Core @ 2.67Ghz

Memory: 4GB Corsair Dominator

Graphics Card: ATi Radeon 5870

Beta Version: NS2 x162

Game Resolution: 1920x1080

Game Graphics: High

Tried so far:

The latest ATi drivers, and some older versions

Lower screen resolution

Lower graphics settings

Remove / Reinstall of NS2

Is there any reason why I have this issue? Is it just me with this problem or are others playing fine?

Sorry if I'm going over old ground.....

There are some issues with performance that UWE haven't got round to ironing out, but they are aware. I imagine we'll see a few of these addressed in 164/165.

So other people are getting this as well?

Just wondering if everyone else has the same determination as me to carry on playing despite the lag or am I one of a handful who get it....

Regardless of your ping most servers still have major tickrate issues, you may have a ping below 100 but thats just the delay between the server sending you the information and you receiving it. The major issue is that servers start out with an average 30 tickrate, which is pretty good for a game like NS2. However when lots of people are connected, lots of combat happening, and lots of bullets, spikes, buildings are everywhere, server tickrate takes a drop. on games such as 4v4 the server tickrate can drop down to 10 or less, sometimes if someone is spamming hydras or other situations server tickrates drops to about 1-5, which means that although the information doesn't take long to reach your computer from the server, the server is only updating you on the game 2 or 5 times a second, you may as well have a framerate of 5. This was worse in previous builds when memory leaks caused server tickrates to drop slowly over time, eventually leading up to a crash, however that is less common now.

The devs are aware of this and are focusing much of their effort to work this out, and right now its not nearly as bad as it used to be, but there is still more work to be done on it. My advise is just play whatever server has a decent tickrate for you and give as much feedback as you can while the devs work on these issues.

It's a server performance issue, as Heroman pointed out. Once servers can maintain the full 30 ticks per second (like 30 FPS), things will be a lot smoother. Then, hopefully someday, the tick (30/s) and update rate (20/s) will be bumped up. A fast-paced game like this would play great with a 60tick/60updaterate.

Yep, 30 server tick corresponds to up to 33 ms extra latency added on to base latency, so if you have 100 ms latency, you have an average of 133 ms of true latency, which is a tad too high for a fast game like NS2. 60 tick would be better.

But currently, server tick is frequently about 6 in combat. That corresponds to up to 166 ms of extra latency. If you have a base latency of 100, that gives you 266 ms of true latency, which is unplayable, even if you had infinite updates per second (retaining the latency) and infinite fps to give a smoother appearance; compensation can only do so much for fast moving players that change direction.

So yeah, just wait till they fix the server performance. (net_stats in console shows you the server performance)

People still play. As long as its a decent server, not too many structures, and few players (8 or less), I find the tick rate/server lag issues to be mostly playable. Its when you get 14 players and tons of structures when its drops to a single digit tick rate and I spend most of my time rubberbanding around the map.
