I still believe that the only intimidating parts in learning NS are species roles/abilites and the RTS aspects (units, resources, objectives). I feel that if anyone is interested in this game, which clearly looks like a FPS rather than a RTS, they will be already be comfortable with the basic FPS setup. I don't think a person will need extra features to become comfortable with something as simple as movement and world/map navigation.
I can think of two games off the top of my head that have an indicator like you are all mentioning:
1) Left 4 Dead's indicator for climbable walls and fences. This is really only there because you cant climb every surface...only what is preset by the mapper. 2) Aliens vs Predator (new 2010). Aliens had indicators for entering vents. The mechanic is a lock-on type...you can't free run into the vents in this game. This indicator is there to let you know that you will transition into that vent if you press the action key/button.
As I said I'm not an advocate of the idea and I wanted to express my opinion. I don't think this is necessary nor a "cool feature" to throw in for kicks.
