and I can't seem to fix them
Hey all, so I bought NS2 (obviously the beta =p) a few days ago but I haven't been able to play one match yet for the following Reasons.
1.) The game is incredibly laggy (only reason I know this is because I created a server), now I know this is an issue everyone has had but I just find it hard to believe that I can run 2 clients of EVE with max settings, however I can't run NS2 at a low res (can't remember the exact resolution. Somewhere around 480x385) and horrible graphics level.
2.) No servers are appearing on my server list. It says '32 servers found' however not one of them is on the list. I have tried taking off steam overlay, checking my firewall, open ports, and launching the game from NS2.exe
3.) I need to have the resolution very low to get anything over 1 fps. However because of this, there are some things I can't actually see on the game. For example the server list is under my game screen and is inaccessible because of the res setting.
Now I'm not complaining or anything like that, but if I knew of theses issues I would of held my cash for a bit longer =p. If anyone knows of other ways to try and solve this issues, please share =) thanks.

What are your system specs? I think the server list issue might be due to resolution. Can't say much else without knowing your system.
Intel core 2 cpu 5300 @ 1.86 GHZ (Duo core so.. 3.7 ghz)
2 gig ram
32 bit vista
After taking the res from 1200x800 or whatever the default res was down to 480x### I got a much better fps (at least 15-20 on the front screen). But In a created game I still only get 5 to 10 fps and the game freezes often. I don't know how badly I would lag in a player match as I can't see any of the servers listed =(. If someone would like to add me on steam so I could join off of them and I could test that aspect out, it would be appreciated =). I'm not sure what my steam name is. It's either mdgrim, mdgrim69, or =(eGO)=â„¢mdgrim
*edit* I forgot to mention, I have a very slow internet connection. If I'm lucky I may get 200kb/s download speed =p
as for local play, your PC is good enough to run the game atleast on mid graphics on a decent resolution. quite possibly the game is just not optimized for your set-up.
If it were my option I would have a far superior connection. But seeing as I haven't made enough cash to purchase my own computer yet, I'm stuck on the family one =p
Radeon Mobility 3475
4 Gig Ram
Win 7 64
This is my setup, and I am struggling - so I can't imagine how things are with you. You are right, I can play all mentioned games very reasonably. But at the moment I can't see you getting anything better than you are.
You'll probably have to hold tight for a while until things improve.
I think the consensus at the moment is to not play unless you have a 3ghz dual core and a reasonable graphics card, if you want a decently looking game at a somewhat playable fps - the game is not optimized for older computers yet, and you'll probably be lucky if indeed Max gets the game to run on the ludacrisly low specs on the info page after launch.
If you absolutely want to play I won't recommend going to that very low resolution. Try your normal resolution but be sure to type "r_shadows false" in the console as your old card will probably work itself to death on the shading otherwise
And your graphics card is very very weak. I'm sorry, but it just flat out can't handle NS2, at least in the beta stage.

Kind of curious as to how you play those other games. I truly mean no offense, but your system is very low end. As well, a 1.86Ghz Core Duo is not anything remotely close to 3.7Ghz, you just can't multiply your speed by the amount of cores, it doesn't work that way. A Geforce 7300LE was barely a step up from onboard graphics about 4 years ago, and is likely your biggest culprit to performance issues. Your best bet is to save up and get a graphics upgrade. Perhaps something like a Radeon 5670, which requires no additional power. I know there are Geforce equivalents as well. It'd do you a world of good, and solutions like that shouldn't be more than $50-70.
Im pretty sure we're talking about a laptop here - 1280x800 res, 1.86ghz c2d, 2gb ram, 7300le - no upgrading that :P
For chills n giggles I'll try running the game on my 2ghz c2d, 2gb ram, 8600m gt laptop - it wont be pretty
My maximum downloadspeed is 90kb/sec and 16 kb/sec upload ( 768k DSL...)
But my ping is usually between 70 and 120 and still playable.

So i think it must be the computer.. or laptop as some of the people think.
1280x800, awful setting, shadows false - 10 man game, I played marine. The only kills I got were two lucky shotgun blasts to the face of lerks :D its hard killing stuff at 13 frames per second
Technical terms: Ping, Latency, MS Response times.
Correct way to look at broadband speeds when you ignore the way ISP's advertises how "fast" they are..

please refrain from posting advice when you clearly have no idea what you are on about.
oh and to the OP:
don't even bother trying to play it on a 7300....
it is barely above on-board so it's basically usless.
I myself bought a new computer to play NS2. First time even upgrading in 3 years.
Old: C2D, 8600GT
New: X4, HD5750
P.S. Playing from Hong Kong so I never get a ping below 150

everyone in EVE lags? lol what are you talking about? The only time I lag in eve is when there is 50-100+ ships on the overview. Your honestly the first person I've talked to that says eve lags horribly =p. Modules activate instantly for me heh. Almost forgot to mention, I play eve at 1280x1024 adapter resolution
Anyways, back on topic. If I don't get a chance to play beta then oh well, too bad. As long as the final product (whenever that may come out) is playable, then I will be happy. Also, on most shooter games I only get about 25 fps. So I'm use to low frame rates haha
