Tutorial on Proper Gorge Infestation use.

<div class="IPBDescription">Using the gorge to quick expand.</div>With the new infestation mechanic many players are complaining that it is hard for aliens to get a foothold early or get res nodes early. This is a valid complaint that I do think needs addressed by tweaking the infestation mechanics, but until we get a better fix here is a short tutorial on using the gorges infestation ability to help mitigate this issue.

Within the newest patch gorges have been given the ability to create infestation anywhere on the map. However, this ability seems like it is being completely underused, especially as it applies to using it in conjunction with the commander and their drifters to get early footholds.

Fast res node expansion: To put up res nodes in areas that it takes to long for commanders to spread infestation to, the gorge can be used instead. As a commander have a gorge go to the res node you want to take but you can't get to yet because of infestation limits. Send a drifter to the res node, have the gorge use his infestation ability on the res node spout, and then build your RT. The RT will generate its own DI and keeps itself alive.

Fast chamber expansion: Simply apply the same procedure as above to the place you want to drop the chamber. I also believe it will generate its own DI and keeps itself alive too. This applies to hydras too.

Forward healing area: As we all know, infestation is the only way to self heal for right now, which I like but think healing should be increase slightly. But I digress, A gorge can build infestation within a small area on the front line so the alien team can use it as a small healing island in a infestation free sea.

If you have any other creative uses for the gorge infestation please post them as a reply and I'll start to compile them in this thread and keep it up to date. Also if someone can double check my suggestions for me, as I don't have a computer for a few days to do a double check myself.

Are you sure harvesters create their own DI? I know its been suggested, but I don't think its been implemented. As for my strategy, I do:

    1. Get up 2 extra hives (for a total of 3) early = more hives to drop DI + more places to connect DI too
    2. DI currently connects through walls, so make patches in straight lines rather than following map paths
    3. Rush DI towards marine res/tech nodes, with covering marine start the ultimate goal. Not only does this give you alien sight and healing, but any buildings that die in marine start cannot be rebuilt before killing the DI

If you follow this strat and cover marine start with DI before they get flamethrowers, you pretty much win.

All alien structures create temporary DI save the Hive, if it's connected to the Hive patch then it'll stay.

When I do use Infestation spray, I generally prioritize resource nodes in the early game because of the 2 minute duration (since by then a competent Commander would've noticed and connected the DI around the nodes). It'll also prevent Extractors from being placed by Marine comm, so that's an added bonus.

Disconnected alien RTs will die off. This doesn't mean the strategy won't work. However, it does mean the gorge must rebuild the infestation periodically.

I like the idea of expanding into the marine base and killing their structures. Its the kind of evil that should be associated with infestation.

Ah, good point! I guess I just generally neglect gorge DI because its temporary and can't connect to comm DI.

gorges dropping DI needs much work, in how he spreads it I rather mean.

Those who played ns1 should remember bile bomb ability gorges had. Well, you should also remember the ability creates very big splash, this is actually how DI should be spread by the gorge. Maybe bile bomb, the name might need to change but the ability is something needs to return. And since DI suppose to harm marine buildings, the new bile bomb would be a perfect solution to the gorges offensive abilities. So the ability gives the gorges good range to spread DI quicker, and he can use it to harm marine buildings at the same time.

gorges right now have really weak DI spread ability, it needs to be stronger, bigger splash and it shouldn't root you into the floor while you trying to spread DI. And energy cost to drop DI by the gorge needs to be reduced.

If the gorges had better system to deploy DI, for example the new bile bomb idea, the gorge would be able to spread DI very quickly for the commander, without being limited to dropping 3 inches of infestation pool, while being rooted to the floor every time he did this, that is the problem.

I rather like those ideas luns ^

Infestation bomb that doubles as bile bomb plus infestation spread seems like the best way to go, and gives the gorge some opportunity to kick ass.

Then the marines need an effective early-game DI counter. Otherwise, I'll just tell my gorges to rush marine start and spray DI everywhere.

like in ns1, this ability can either be unlocked by the second hive or researched once the second hive is up. The idea offers good offensive ability gorge lacks, and spreading DI more effectively is rather lacking by the gorge now, this indeed would be good change. We can also finally stop looking at the ugly yellow circle each time we drop DI.

For once, I agree with luns. But I also agree with Scardybob. It's a good idea, it's simply a matter of balance.
