Kinda hard to be unbalanced if both sides are identical.
MvM would probably be interesting, although I don't know how much fun it would be, everyone shooting everyone else with rifles would probably get a bit old.

Yeah, identical sides is the only way to reach perfectly balanced gameplay ;)
Be really interesting to see flame thrower marine vs flame thrower marine :P
Next we definitely NEED aliens vs aliens, Fade vs Fade will be epic, and just imagine, Onos vs Onos. Why stop there? you could even make it so when infestation from the two opposing alien sides overlaps each other, then even the infestation dukes it out, leaving the more concentrated infestation victorious.

But on a weapon-by-weapon basis, it is. Because otherwise that's like saying early versions of CS are balanced because both teams have access to the same equipment.
I remember seeing hints that this would happen in the original NS and never happened. I think it's something they tacked early on thinking, "Oh, this would be easy to implement with Lua," but after the numerous delays and setbacks to the actual game it got pushed off to the side (and rightfully so -- it wouldn't be very fun).

Well yeah you can have that, hence the 'everyone with rifles' comment.
I generally consider that less important however, you can have a fun game with few weapons.
MvM mods in NS1 existed, but they were usually horrible due to the fact that hit points weren't designed for it (a marine has more hitpoints than a skulk, buildings were done to last X amount of time against bites, etc)
But why play MvM when so much of the appeal of NS is the asymmetrical gameplay?

Well the game is in beta phase right now, so it's supposed to be "iron out the problems time", not "play alternate modes time"
