Very surprised -- impressed
I felt crazy and installed NS2 on my latop. I messed around with the model/cinematics tools then figured I may as well see how my machine crashes when I run the game. Well it didn't crash. BUT it did have control/key issues.
The laptop is an HP Elitebook 6390p:
Intel Core 2 Duo - P8700 @ 2.something GHZ (stock)
Intel Express Series 4, integrated chipset with mfr drivers...I think the closest is the G45 (supports PS 3.0, I think? Does it matter?)
2GB RAM
Windows XP SP2
I was really surprised when it not only started and allowed me to change settings, but when I was able to start a LAN game. It ran smooth, by no means, of course. I could get up to 20fps on rockdown when I looked into a corner. Low frames around 2-3. The controls for strafe right and backwards (D and S) were not working. They would instead make me move left and forward respectively. Otherwise everything seems to work well. I did not play enough to test things like the flamethrower. The tools allowed me to use atmospheric lighting however, not sure if that applies to it being able to work in-game as well. Screen links below. I ran windowed with all low settings, 800x600.
I would have put these in my screenshot library, but Steam won't let NS2 screens be viewed public. I posted a topic on the E-Team forum about how I worked around it and was able to eventually -- with some hassle.

Strange they don't reference an actual image file, these links. I hope they work.

Like NS2 though, you'll find a lot of games also unplayable on that system.
It has not happened to me yet, but I do still hear a lot of moanings on public servers regarding movement keys not sending people in the right directions.

i get this on a laptop. both strafe keys go left. intermittent though. restarting / reconnecting - fixes.
I believe the setting is "r_atmospherics true/false" to toggle the atmospheric lighting effect. It's set to false by default. Though I think this only works when a light source is designated to use atmospherics. I remember a post where it was stated that underneath one of the tech point locations (alien expansion in Tram maybe? I've seen it but I have a poor memory) there is some atmospheric lighting -- It's reddish in color and shines from below the floor grating. I've seen screenshots of other users modifying maps or creating maps with atmospheric lighting in it. It looks particularly nice with the ventilation fans being backlit.
