as you can see here "welders" are already mentioned. So i guess we will see them anyway in some form later.
in combination with exosuits, welders will become really mandatory again (if they work similar to ns1).

I support Align. I want welders too. But not for everyone. This Casual-Gaming thing (=make everything as easy as possible) was never mine. I want more complex mechanics in a game. And complex means often: If aaa then bbb - relations.
IF you want too repair armor and buildings THEN you need to buy a welder and sacrifice your pistol.
Sacrificing the pistol is enough I think, because you have to buy the welder with your resources every live. I don't think we need a pure support role (=side grade for standard rifle). We only need more options for more complexity.

This won't render the MACs useless, because there is always enough to weld and not every marine has decided to buy a welder.

I love the support role. And I get mad if I see a damaged building, write that to the commander and stand at that building for 1 minute waiting for a MAC which I can than defend while it welds. Let me do this please. I want to help.

I think the welder should replace the main gun, not the sidearm. the gorge has little to no attack abilities at all, so sticking the marine support class with only a pistol and an axe is fine with me.

Somewhat like the previous mentioned rifle attachment, or actually leaving them without a primary weapon? Because in the latter case, I'd say marines are far more vulnerable than a gorge if you did that. But then I'm far better at being a gorge than a marine really.

Though I guess vulnerable is the idea.

In order to keep it fair, we would need to give the purely defensive marine some extensive survivability perks. I.e. a gas-mask, 4x the armor, self-healing health, and marathon-runner speed. Btw when the marine self-heals, he should be emitting a green gas which hurts any alien that gets too close. Perhaps we should also give the welder marine the fades blink capability.
