... don't make him a happy slappy peggle style helper.
You should make him a really sarcastic, Dylan Moran style character that finds his name childish and hates life.
<strike>Gamers can relate to this.</strike> A bit of humor would make the learning process more engaging for newer players. I know I'm the kind of person who skips tutorials and doesn't read the manual when putting furniture or contraptions together.
I take it they're going to be little pop ups with a drifter picture?
You could also have a drifter for the alien tutorial style messages and a MAC for the Marine ones. Infact, it might work better if the MAC was the sarcastic one and had a personality comparable to Marvin from hitchikers guide and Drifter's just really twisted and sadistic. Either way, think about it! Tutorials with personality, totally rockin'.
Peace!

+1 on the personality idea.
MAC = Wheatly from Portal 2

Seriously though, I really liked how L4D/Portal 2 handled their tutorials with the intuitive "training" mechanic that points you to things on the screen. Something like that would be better than tooltips like NS1 had.
I agree with this. Something that highlights important things to know for knew players. This is more intuitive because it highlights the stuff as the player finds it instead of having him follow some orders of an annoying unintuitive AI helper. God, I hated that ######en paper clip in MS word. Worst helper ever.
