<div class="IPBDescription">Hive Support System</div><!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->- Toying with flexible D/M/S style tech tree for aliens but it doesn’t allow us to expand the game easily (assuming a hive could only support one type of chamber, that limits us to 3 - Crag, Shift, Shade)<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
So they're discussions of returning to NS1 style Hive tech tree. However, I'm not a fan because of the numerous limitations that have been discussed a million times. I want the freedom to see all tech and lifeforms play in all stages of the game no matter the number of hives. I'll spare you hearing them again in the thread.
So here is my alternative. Instead of tying tech to the a hive meaning each hive supports one chamber and tech type, you could have the number of chambers you're allowed to build tied to the hive. This still restricts aliens forcing them to make crucial and planned decisions, but it also allows them the freedom to change their tactics according to the situation.
You start out with three chambers possible and for the number of hives you have it multiples that. The one side caveat to this is upgrading your hive to a colony ups the multiplier by one.
One Hive: 1 * 3 = Three of any Chamber possible
Two Hives: 2 * 3 = Six
Three Hives: 3 * 3 = Nine
One Colony: 2 * 3 = 6 Chambers
One Colony & One Hive: 3 *3 = 9 Chambers
Two Colonies: 4 * 3 = 12 Chambers
And so On.
This encourages, and practically forces aliens to expand out so that they have more hives to support more infrastructures while not completely limiting the tech tree. You would just want to make sure it is visually clear to the commander what there limit is, where they're at on chambers at that moment, and how to get more chamber room.

I'm not sure if they're going to keep the Mass and Colony upgrades, but those would be ideal for increasing the chamber cap.
