<div class="IPBDescription">Only in commander mode though... makes it more like an RTS.</div>Kinda like COH, have an icon above units on your team when you are in commander view. It would make it easier to see where your units are in dark areas, and really help them pop out at you. Icons could be different depending on which weapon or alien the player currently is using. Sounds like a bad idea maybe but just try it, could make the game look more polished. Just an idea. Is this already going to be added in eventually?
I think it would also make the commander view a lot easier on the eyes because it does strain my eyes a little bit, and in general it will just make being commander more user friendly. Let me know how other ns2 players feel about this.

Also the health-ring around players and structures should ALWAYS be visible, not only when they are selected.
while we're on the topic close enough to medpacks who thinks they should be able to be dropped directly on a marine?

Isn't it a bug that you can't drop them directly on marines?
Edit: also, there should be two health rings around players, so you can see their health AND armor. I know welders are coming back, but won't MACs still be able to weld marines at some point?

No.
*angry face*
Information such as average-health, average-distance, and weapon could all be represented with a minimal amount of screen space by means of a little icon over players heads. A possible implementation: health represented by color (red = loosing health, yellow = full health no armor, green = still has armor), average-distance represented by icon opacity, and weapon represented by icon shape (could use minimap icons or imo this is clearer -> abstract art like triangle = rifle, circle = shotgun, flamethrower = square, chevron = minigun, etc).
Bad company 2 makes use of a similar "icon-over-players-head" system, i.e. lightning bolt = attacker, wrench = engineer, cross = medic...

I think, that would look strange.
Afaik UWE tries to have as little HUD as possible.
But maybe they should change the display from "Marine: 72%" to "Marine 80H | 15A" or so.
BTW.
+1 to comander sees always the Health of the marines
+1 to have two healthcircles, or so, to distinguish between health and armor
(happens sometimes to me that a commander drops a medpack because my armor is damaged)

I think your right. I was working on a mod to implement exactly what i described (currently it can display the names of all teammates floating over their heads), and while testing it in public servers it occurred to me, when name tags lined up with hive-sight, that aliens already have a similar capability, i.e. it seems to tracks teammates + spotted?/parasited? humans + some static structures? Too bad it's all basically the same icon from what i can tell. Kinda confusing imo.
Anyway, i'll see what i can do to provide marines with something way better xD
EDIT: hmm just realized that alien vision provides these benefits as well, i.e. rapid teammate + enemy + structure spotting... zzz marines get no loving!
I think these are just place holders for now, as they are all just the ns1 sprite used for parasite and hive sight. Even in NS1, they had a sprite to differentiate between buildings and players. So I imagine once they get the time and resources they'll get us some updated pretty sprites to tell the difference between everything.
