Marine and/or alien.
Tried to search to see whether this had been brought up but the search button wasn't responding so...
Playing recently the word commander got me thinking about having ranks and how it was in combat.
Would anything be gained by adding a rank system into the main NS2 gameplay?
By ranking i mean private, sergeant etc...
It could be a system that carried from game to game or just the current game you were in.
It could possibly come with buffs but i know people can be very against them, so it may even just be a boasting point.
yay or nay

I'm one of those people who isn't a fan of persistent 'buff' rewards. Giving extra advantages to experienced players over new ones seems like a sure fire way to piss off potential new customers. And even if the rewards only lasted for one game, one of the things that annoyed me about combat was that the superior team would often pull ahead of the 'losers' in upgrades and then spend the rest of the game crushing them over and over.
If it's just for bragging rights I guess that would be ok. As you can tell it doesn't interest me too much (like achievements) but commercially it could be a good idea. From what I can tell on gamer forums many, many people fall over themselves to get all the achievements in games.
Still think what bungie did with Halo: Reach is one of the best systems to date.

Why does every FPS seems to need an xp system nowadays ? NS is a team-based game, if you do well your team will win, and not you will get a fancy gun ...
If it is just a rank, why not but how will you determine who "won", of course the commander did not score a lot of kills, but his role is however crucial.
If a leaderboard/stattracker is put in the game at some point, I would very much like to see some ranks (maybe hidden ranks?) only to give a visual character progression, like the new Red Orchestra 2 will have - as you progress, your skin would change slightly to be a little more ragged, scarred and experienced looking (or at least you should be able to choose between unlocked skins, so not everyone end up being the same last skin) - this way, you will earn a little progression and newbies will have a visual indicator as to who to follow and learn from
No potentially unbalancing reward system is required here. As said before, the essence of this game is a team shooter.
If they want to please pro_g4ym0rs they could drown them with loads of titles... like, "best door closer" or "most fade kills with a toothpick". All fine for me, as long it hast no influence on balance.
Veteran players should only beat New players with skill.
Not with weaponry.

Ok here is a layout for a good rank system it looks at. W/L ratio and K/D ratio and W/L ratio as a commander and how you get that is. The longest person in com for that game gets the win/lose to there player stats. So you cant just jump in and get that stat.
As far as xp and unlock no i agree thats dumb and kills a game. But there is no reason why a good ranking system couldnt be inplaced into the game. Would be cool if each player at there stat page with detail info on them. This will have to come later after they finish the game but there is no point why this cant be done.
No rpgish needs to be added just a good o ranking system that well.. ranks you. You can see whos good or not.
Or one kinda cool element would be gorge hats when you get in the top 10000 ranks
but if you fall out of the top 10000 you lose the hat so gives you something to thrive for i guess lol. I want a cowboy hat.
true ok overall score would work better. do coms get score for being com? idk maybe score and w/l coms. Any hoo would be something cool to see where you stack vs other players like hey im rank 203452 and i suck! lol
That said I'm working on a stat tracking program that will do something similar (like hlstats). It will be server specific but could easily be setup to receive ranking information across multiple servers if desired. Either way I feel a global game-integrated ranking system would probably be a bad idea and should be left to specific servers if they choose to do so. When I get some more work done I'll be sharing with server ops in the near future hopefully sometime after the next patch.
Like have a icon for levels of commander experience. Novice, Intermediate, Veteran.
Based on how many 5+ minute games completed rather than how well you play.
We already have a scoreboard, and outside of that, what you did in the previous dozen games isn't going to matter in the current one you're in.
I'll agree that Bungie is the boss when providing ranking systems but I don't think it applies to the NS gameplay.
Maybe stat tracking like Dystopia which is all encompassing might be useful. They track some very creative stats.
http://www.dystopia-stats.com/
(Click on someone and you can see their stats)
i used to check my certain stats for certain classes or certain days to see where I needed to practice more.
As far ranking like sergent lietenant etc. and whatever names for the alien team.
I think these would be more valuable assigned and removed by the commander
That way when JoBlow says "Run in there and sacrifice your life"
if he is a lieutenant...it has more gravitas.
ranks in general should be a post release feature...in my opinion.
Just keep it simple, no billions of different forms of private or corporal.
Uh oh! Time to spam the forum with posts :)
Hmm, what kind of rank would esuna get then?
Yeah what a terrible idea
It's a team game, individual performance overall is irrelevant. Also sounds way too much like combat.
No thanks.
things like:
''most accurate''
''most damaging''
''pacifist''
''most sneaky''
''most frantic''
''suicidal bomber''
''most outgunned''
"spur crazy"
''most manic''
''hypochondriac''
''most combustible''
''most lazy''
''lead sponge''
''worst shot''
''most suicidal''
''survivor''
"glass jaw"
''lucky shot''
''best equipped''
''head surgeon''
''nut putter''
''butcher''
''CQC expert''
''sniper''
''brawler''
''most greedy''
"most resourceful"
"pistolero"
"fireman"
"most chaotic"
"most professional"
"goat puncher"
etc etc....
I think it would be fun, and it would glorify you either ways and kind of tell you how you did.
*Edit*
Vladamir, Savage has a similar end game reward system which I do find amusing. That wouldn't be so bad but I don't think it's worth dev time at this point.

Actually I like this idea, some stats like in worms could be kinda fun.
