New player with some questions

Im thinking about grabbing the NS2 beta, from all the fun i had back in the day with NS1, i just have a few questions first.

1. Is there still the upgrade system like in NS1, where you can upgrade your alien to have like cloaking, higher damage bites, sense where enemies are, etc.?

2.How stable is the beta? Is it buggy or relativley smooth?

3. Hows the population? How many people play on average?

Thanks.

    1. Yes, but it isn't fully implemented yet. Only a few upgrades are included.

    2. Crashing seems to be much reduced in B178/B179 (but that doesn't mean it won't happen). Also, framerate and server-load lag are also greatly improved. However, its still much laggier than most modern released games. Its definitely playable (lag-wise) now, but don't expect miracles.

    3. http://www.play4dead.com/ns2/. Click on the servers link at the top to see the current list of servers and playercount. In general, you'll almost always be able to find a populated server.

Alien upgrades now require the commander to research them first before they are available for purchase by the rest of the team.

On the plus side you can now purchase the upgrades at the same time as you choose what to evolve to.

. . . and someone f^cked up and made an Alien Commander. Which totally flies in the face of what the aliens are all about but whateva.

I actually like the way the alien comm plays atm, I wasn't particularly fond of the idea when I first heard about it but now its in and I've actually played it I don't think its such a bad idea.

Its not the same as the marine comm though, its a bit less intense as you aren't trying to micromanage your team and dropping medpacks and such.

    1. yes, as mentioned above, it's a pretty new implementation as of patch 178. (its 179 right now.)

    2. The beta is incredibly smooth, I have heard people continuously complain about stuttering etc, but the imbeciles never noticed it was the server causing it, and when I changed server and saw some of the complainers on the smooth one, It finally silenced them for good.
(personally, I have never lagged client side wise, and I have only crashed twice, and not once since 178.)
but my rig is beast fyi.

    3. There are always people and servers, especially when there's a new patch, however, most servers that have people are full, leaving only the ###### stuttery servers (as mentioned above) joinable.

    4. In fact, I did four times, and once even on the left, with no scooba diving equipment nor a table, but this question is extremely personal. Why even ask it in the first place?

FUUUUUUUUU you made me go back and check!

Anyway, the game is in beta so think about a game you really like playing, now think of it missing half the features you really like, now imagine playing it on dial-up internet, and well, you have a really ###### game. NS2 is nothing like that.
