<div class="IPBDescription">"Thinking seriously about adding lifetime to hydras"</div>I think this is going down the right track, and I wanted to add a little touch : p I think gameplay elements that disappear after an amount of time are too old school.
I propose the Hydra can bloom, and when it is bloomed it is most deadly. I think after time passes it should lose some colour and start to wilt, and lose some effective range. It will eventually lay dormant unless rejuvenated. I also think that if a marine dies near the hydra, it should re-energize the Hydra as if the marine is being composted, putting it back into a bloom stage if it happened to be wilting and near death.
Why?
Because in my mind what will happen, is that a single marine or pair may wish to avoid a bloomed Hydra, however if it is wilted, they can try and take it out. If one of them should die in the near proximity, after a short duration the Hydra will regain its strength and bloom once more becoming more formidable. From an alien perspective it would become tactical to ambush near a wilting Hydra in order to bolster the areas defenses. On the contrary, marines may hesitate to try their luck, and not take a wilted Hydra so lightly. To complete the circle, marines could completely avoid hydra defended areas and come back at a later time to a defense that no longer functions and was wasted res by the alien team.
This gives the gameplay mechanic a nice ebb and flow, forcing more of a methodical approach to an assault or defense around a static structure. On a more organic level, I think this breathes the feeling of life into the game and is an easy concept for new players to understand.

Maybe Hydras start out like currently (petals closed), and when they attack Marines coming in, they blossom. Marines can prematurely trigger their blossoming by waltzing in and moving back out, which starts the timer for those Hydras until they wilt.
Gorges can heal spray wilted Hydras to revitalize them to their functional state, so there will be some maintenance from Gorges required.

That's a very fun concept!
