What about calling them Cysts?

<div class="IPBDescription">Alternate names for mini-pustule</div>So, I was thinking about the word "pustule", and I like that it is appropriately juicy, organic and a little bit disgusting. Then I saw the thoughts about "mini-pustules" and how that just didn't sound right.

What about calling them cysts?

Cyst
–noun
1. Pathology . a closed, bladderlike sac formed in animal tissues, containing fluid or semifluid matter.
2. a bladder, sac, or vesicle.
<i><b>3. Botany, Mycology .
a. a <u>sporelike </u>cell with a resistant, protective wall.
b. a cell or cavity enclosing reproductive bodies.</b></i>

Not only is it shorter and therefore easier to type(as well as a smaller word representing a smaller object) but it fits the feel of the aliens, and is practically a synonym of pustule.

That, and it starts with a "c" just like croach! (I am still wondering about that word, but Kharaa was a stroke of brilliance, so maybe it just needs to click)

Other juicy synonyms for pustules or mini-pustules:
Sore
Blister
Welt(or wheal, but that is just a strange word)
abscess
Boil
Canker (also starts with a c)

and my two <i>personal </i>favorites:
Carbuncle and
Furuncle
;)

Any other favorites?

    +1 to Cyst!
Kharaaa, Croach, Cycst... lots of fun hard consonants in there. It really sounds like those names are part of a set or theme.

Some of those other names aren't bad (blister), and nearly all of them draw an instant visual image compared to "pustule." Cyst FTW

I also like the cyst, much shorter and easier to say and write. also like the sound of it better.

    getsatisfaction?

Sorry I don't like it. It doesnt fit the actual function of the pustules.
  • Taxen0Taxen0 Join Date: 2010-07-30 Member: 73357Members
I don't see how pustule fit the function of the pustules better or worse than cyst either tbh.
    it's almost the same thing.

Not very similar according to what I've read.

    Definitions from Oxford dictionary.

Pustule: a raised spot or rounded swelling, especially on a plant resulting from an infection

Cyst: a hollow organ/cavity containing liquid secretion; a protective capsule containing larva.
  • Taxen0Taxen0 Join Date: 2010-07-30 Member: 73357Members
use google images for both and they at least look similar, but I don't have a medical education so that might be why.
and from what I can tell none of them spread by themselves, that's what I was referring to when I said that they fit the function just as good. cyst just seems easier to say.

A pustule is an infectious growth, a cyst is an infectious growth. How much similarity do you want because I don't think I can do better than COMPLETELY THE SAME?

well, while you pustulate what it really means to you, I'll stick with incysting what I want.

I thought we had this discussion (and it got summarily ignored) when the pustule concept was first introduced.

great Idea, however I think that could or should be a re-searchable upgrade for all pustules.

Best name suggestion I've heard yet!

Accurate. One syllable. Isn't already in use by another popular title. I'm surprised no one brought this up earlier.

Good idea. I like that it's short and to the point.

My only problem with it is that it's a new term for something that is essentially the same. Pustules and mini-pustules are the same in function/behavior, they only differ in size. So I'm not sure it makes sense to have another term for something that's the same thing (see: carbon + nanites).

hahahahaha, I couldn't stop laughing! As they say, a good pun is its own reword.

Pustule is fun to say, and I think differentiating between comm pustules and gorge cysts might indeed be a bit complicated, but I'm kinda I'm sad nobody voted for furuncle :(
  • TyphonTyphon Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 1899Members
Oh, I was thinking just discard pustule entirely and use cyst instead. I don't think the gorge's version even needs a different name. If it really does, then just call them small cysts.

Easier to say, people have heard the word "cyst" before, and it sounds fun.

I would prefer cysts as a general term for pustules, much easier to say.
  • SgtHydraSgtHydra Join Date: 2007-11-29 Member: 63046Members
    Indeed.

"Drop a cyst here" comes out real nice and smooth. "Drop a pustule here" is just a real tongue twister.
