Out of video memory error

I think this has happened a few times now but its the first time i checked the console properly.

I had just joined a server and i noticed my fps was alot lower than usual, while using console to read an old message, i saw that the console was getting spammed by a message with some sort of directory ending with something along the lines of (...out of video card memory).
It seemed to happen in bursts, not too bad vs 2 skulks, but when a lerk came flying in spraying gas eveywhere, it dropped to 2-5 fps and i had a constant console error spam.

I haven't seen any other posts about this so thought id see if its a known general bug or perhaps something specific to my card (gtx 570) ? :s

Like i say doesn't happen often, may have been the first time even, because generally my fps is great even with 16 players and lots of structures on high settings (generally the server gives out way before my comp), but i have noticed it dip sort of like that before.

Oh and also, just exiting the game and starting back up seemed to solve it.

It would be more helpful if you posted your specs like what CPU's you have, how many CPU's, how much memory you have on your card, how much RAM you have, etc...

or simply post your dxdiag. and the full error would be helpful, next time take a screenshot.

I haven't seen or heard about this error, but you can try the regular stuff, like updating your video drivers.

It's sorta simple fixing the issue if it says out of vram. You need more Vram, and that's it. Might want to play at lower resolution. If it doesn't say anything about that, you need better CPU's. NS2 runs single core only, so you need powerful single cores.

Actually resolution has less of an impact then texture quality. But since he's saying the game usually runs smoothly, it might be a bug in the engine which loaded too much stuff in an infinite loop judging from the console spam...

Also there are log files in your "%appdata%/Natural Selection 2" folder, which might be useful for the devs

Same problem here, its an issue with the beta. I have a nvidia gtx 460 (1gb). It immediately maxes out my video ram the whole time I'm playing, but the framerate doesn't get really choppy until a bit into the game. That error spams in console as well. Fixed it by switching to medium graphics (game never uses more than 766mb vram under that setting is much smoother).

I figure it'll get fixed once the game gets more optimized.

It's likely in part from the occlusion. If you look the wrong way and it bugs, the whole map could render and although many video cards can handle it ok, others give up. Occlusion fixes have been at the top of my wish list for some time now. It could also have to do with particle systems, but then again bugs in occlusion can just magnify this problem if too many particle systems get rendered at once.

    Ok comp specs are :
    i7 950
    6gb ram
    gtx 570 (1280mb ram)
(and drivers are up to date)

I dont really know anythng about dxdiag and couldn't find the appdata folder, but if it'll help at all i could try and get that sorted.
But i just noticed aero and lazer have pretty much nailed it (so i guess it's a known problem to the dev's?), guess i'll have to play on medium for now then, please do a tweet or add it to logs somewhere when it's sorted so i know i can up it to max again :>

If you have vista or 7, you can write dxdiag.exe in the search bar, and it'll appear.
Also, are there many people having problems with vRAM? Never had any issues with it, but that's probably because I have 2.7 GB's of VRAM... :)
