Your all focused more on the possible problem than the effective solution.

Auto team balance plugin. Someone rage quits? Ohh well, the plugin solves the issue without either team even noticing.

Problem solved :)

P.S. - There is no to tell if someone is rage quitting unless the visually state "grrrr, Im going to rage quit!".

One current problem with that is, switching teams screws you on Pres, you get your Pres reverted to 0 right now and that's terrible. Though this happens when you crash and return as well, either way the game needs to be set up to remember your Pres amount during a round.

After that, I'd love an auto-balance, because you're hard pressed to find someone who will volunteer to change right now. Though this may be a least in part because of the Pres loss.

Auto team-switching is more complicated than it seems for NS. For one you cannot remove commanders from their team. Fades\Onos' isn't really fair to the aliens either. Same story with marines and JPs\HAs. Of course the personal-res would somehow have to be transferred along with the player (50 p-res may be worth more in the alien-team than the marine-team, that's another issue).

Fail...

Its not always rage quit, some people have a real life and stuff to do or just want to sleep.
I mean i hate rage quiters but if they leave, other people will join the game.
In my opinion you can't do anything against this.
The only way you can do something is, if people get something on the end of a round.
Like in Battlefield Bad Company 2, if you leave before the game ends, you don't get your medals, points and on.
But NS2 isn't a game like BF, so it will never happend.

Epic Fail...
Sure, if you are commander or right now defending something -> woooooopppppsssssy -> marines now -> wtf.
Seriously auto team balance in ns2?
I mean did you not think about it?
If you onos or fade and defending something you get auto balanced...no way.
Or if your game crashs or what ever, you rejoin and you can not join your team because you get auto balanced.
Autobalance in complex games like ns2 = NO GO

Define a Ragequitter.

Because I tend to leave without a trace randomly, most notably on public servers. This depends on the game of course, but in general I don't see a problem to just leave in any shooter game, just because I so desire. Not because I rage over getting killed, more because it's a reasonable moment to do so, it's not that I make up my mind to leave instantly, but getting killed is a good trigger for me.

Sure, in Dota style games it makes sense to penalize that, as there isn't any possibility to replace a leaving player, but certainly not in NS2... ragequitting used to be a fun word to entitle someone acting like a numbnut, who leaved the very few seconds afterwards when you shoot him to giblets. But these days it took out of hand proportions it seems, because it gets fired off for everyone who just leaves a game... that's just ridiculous. A script like that would make me leave on a respawn (a state which defines me as more useful than dead in my book) after standing around for some secs (ofc tabbed, so I time out), as I don't rage when leaving, I just want to, as I enjoy a game break from time to time, for reasons I don't need to elaborate, if I had to, you guys most certainly would need some fresh air.

I'd actually see it working best if it switched the last person who joined the team who isn't comm upon their death. I imagine it would be trivial to number players in order of joining, but determining the comm might be tricky. Comms (especially on the alien side) frequently jump out of the hive/cs, so you might need to keep track of time-in-comm-view rather than whether someone is currently in the hive/cs.

I think it is important to realise:

This system wont effect HOW people play on a server, it will effect WHO plays on a server.

I think most people are somewhat over-reacting to this suggestion. From my experience the majority of people join/leave inbetween rounds on busy servers. While this would penalise the odd normal person, they will undo that penalty by finishing games more frequently than not. This would have no effect on me, despite occasionally leaving early due to other interests or a simple lack of will to play. This is because I finish most of the games I play.

What this system would do is penalise those people that only ever stick around on the winning team. Over time preventing them playing on the server. This system wont effect how people play on a server, it will effect who plays on a server.

edit: I would much rather play on a server with people who frequently finish matches (they have a different attitude towards games). Which makes this a good idea imo.
