I think it would be a very cool feature to add a itemshop for the aliens. It would differentiate the two races more and would give the aliens more options. Should i save my pRES or buy an item?
How it should look like. First of all the Item shop, should be build for tres from the Aliencomm. Then inside the shop there are some items that give a slight advantage (not too big) like 5% chance to give a critical hit (20% more damage), or the shoes of speed (5% more speed) or silence (5% less radius where marines can here you), shade effect for a single skulk, more damage/health/armor....
I believe a brainstorming in the community would give a ton of ideas and items.
All items would cost an amount of pRes, and for each Hive there will come new stronger items which would cost more pRes of course (perhaps even class specific). That would also give the 4th Hive a kind of sense ;).
I know it is much work for you guys, but it would be an impressive feature for an FPS/RTS/(RPG) game. The shop could be used from the the marine Armory, and the items could show in the evolve menu (just 2 or 3 slots), perhaps with stats of the alien (Damage,armor,hp,...).
And the aliens can decide, should I save my pRes for getting Fade or buy the shoes of speed and be faster.
I know there are much questions like, how many items could a single alien buy at one time (perhaps 2), and should they fall down like Marine guns and are repickable for a short time,... and so on.

Aliens don't go shopping. They gestate, evolve and hatch :P
I also don't understand why we need a "shop" in general. There is already the "buy menu" for aliens (you can choose upgrades / life-forms) which is actually what you suggested. and the marines already have the armory (to "shop")

My idea was have 2 upgrades per chamber (8 in total, shift, shade, whip, crag) where the whip upgrades do not consume a tech point. Upgrades from one chamber are mutually exlusive to each other, so aliens can make a good or a bad choice (depending on the situation). so in total you can have 4 upgrades active at once resulting in a total of 16 "builds" at 3 hives

I don't think this needs to turn into DOTA or ns_combat or some variation of kawaii jRPG.
How about instead of a maximum limit, each upgrade costs more then the last?
Each addition upgrade could cost +1 more. So you can load up all upgrades, but you will have an extremely expensive alien.
