SpaceEngine - Simulation
<a href="http://en.spaceengine.org/" target="_blank">http://en.spaceengine.org/</a>
>What's space engine?
An absolutely amazing space sim where you can explore the whole virgo supercluster (thousands of galaxies). Each galaxy is filled with billions-trillions of stars and each star has an average of 6 or so planets. Each planet is fully detailed.
>How does this work?
The game has nearly all of the known galaxies, stars, and planets in the virgo supercluster catalogued already but the rest of the stars/planets are procedurally generated.
>How do I get it?
Go to the link. download it. its free. It is also developed by a single russian dude. Absolute cool guy!

Space is big.
.. and beautiful! Thanks for posting the vid, forgot about that.
Downloading, hopefully my computer can run it.
It takes a lot of time for it to load in the textures, check the bottom of the screen if it seems finished. I also suspect only a few terran plants actually have cliffs and mountains.

That's why I have a favour to ask of you! Take a screenshot (for wallpaper purposes, so disable the HUD if possible) of a planet in our solar system from the surface of a moon orbiting them. So for example a picture of Jupiter from the surface of Io (or if there's something else in a closer orbit), so that the surface of the moon you're on also shows.

Here's a few variations that should fit your description. Sadly being really close to the surface only shows some rather low res textures.

You problably have a graphics card that doesn't support the OpenGL version. I have the same problem. I just found that with a friend and on his machine it runs as smooth as an elven ass is clean.
As for Kouji - you may find help in the troubleshooting forums!

Feel free to post screenshots, i'm gonna ask my buddy about his and post them.

Apparently the main.cfg config file is VRam is set at 1024 at default, I now set it at 512Mb and it works!

Give me your ingame settings or your main.cfg if you have changed it, im at proxima 1 and the rock formations are hilariously bad looking. I have all the graphic options which enhance graphics ticked and set the LOD to 3 (tried lowering it and it just stopped loading crap at all). It's also loading stuff forever, I've been sitting on the same spot for 10min now and it still isn't finished :(. We'll see if it eventually turns out like your rock formations.
Protip: Don't change loading mode, it gives you around 0,8 fps and forces you to essentially force kill the process.
EDIT: Checking the forums it seems to be a problem with ATI cards :.( gonna try disabling craters.
Why?
Lens flares. Jesus Christ. Somebody actually spent time on programming IN a feature to make pictures look like ######. Good job.

It's a option you can tick off in the graphics menu but they are helpful when navigating a solarsystem so I mostly keep em on. Note that some of my pictures are taken one with lensflare and one without.
Yeah, my buddy has a NVIDIA card - this could explain EVERYTHING.

MUST HAVE MORE SPACE THINGS
EDIT: So this thing crashes every 7 seconds... "GL_OUT_OF_MEMORY'. 8GB system, 3GB VRAM... yeah.... no.
Which is a shame because the flying around in space (not near planets) is suitably incredible and the pictures of the planets makes my balls ache they look so good.
I have more than enough power to run this - and I'm not even on an ATI card. 2x GTX580s, 8GB system RAM, 4GHZ CPU i7 something or other... all the drivers are up to date.
Whenever I go near a planet's surface it's flat and plain and ugly no matter what my LOD settings are - though that's not really fair because LOD of +1 or higher is like instant "Out of memory" fail, even though I can clearly see it's not using more than 1GB of VRAM - even the log.se file says it can see all 3GB of my VRAM.
I don't think I've used this for more than 3 minutes at a time without getting this:
<img src="http://i.imgur.com/MtzgK.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />
Apparently space is littered with them.
<img src="http://i.imgur.com/oXgo2.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
It crashed instantly after taking this picture.
Only thing I can suggest (which you obviously tried first me thinks) is to check out the troubleshooting forums.
<a href="http://spaceengine.ucoz.ru/forum/4" target="_blank">http://spaceengine.ucoz.ru/forum/4</a>
Other that that, you could try version .93 rather than .94 - it seems some People have a better run with this.
All we can do for the moment is waiting for the next version which will eventually look like this:
<a href="http://spaceengine.ucoz.ru/forum/15-105-1" target="_blank">http://spaceengine.ucoz.ru/forum/15-105-1</a>
The only thing that seemed promising in that troubleshooting forum was the issue about RAM usage because bizarrely SpaceEngine is only a 32-bit application (<b>it's 2011 why the ###### I am dissapoint</b>). It said to limit your VRAM usage. I have 8GB of SRAM and 3 GB of VRAM, so I set the percentage to something ridiculous like 10% and it still crashes 'out of memory'.
I'm also getting tons of these gl_invalid_framebuffer_operation_ext errors...
Infinity: The quest for earth
<a href="http://www.infinity-universe.com/" target="_blank">http://www.infinity-universe.com/</a>
It seems to still be slowly chugging along in development too. Pretty much all the function of this, but as far as I know all procedurally generated rather than any parts based on real locations. Also it planned to have some gameplay, they have a combat alpha still lying around somewhere in fact, but good luck finding anyone still playing it.
I'd say Infinity is prettier though in general.
