imo if you're going to create a game in the vein of a 90's RPG, it ought to be Ultima Underworld or Ultima 7. Although they had a lot more to them so they would be harder to emulate.
They even copied the magic system.
Pretty neat how the game is pretty much just an electronic version of the roleplaying game, to the point that you must either be familiar with D&D beforehand or read through the manual in order to know what all the races, classes, spells and abilities do (because there are no tooltips at all!)
Also I'm kind of surprised at some of the game mechanics in that game. Point and click at levers, hidden buttons, putting items on pressure switches. Somewhat advanced considering the time these games where made.
