possible welders?
Its just a speculation but,
I wonder if we'll see marines carrying a welder with them. just for aesthetics, since they already repair powernodes, friendly armor and build structures.
I'm sure they're already working on that. woot
Also,
Idea #8: Give points incrementally when damaging structures, instead of only when it’s destroyed (encourages teamwork, but this is soft).
its in bold in the design log. Seems like a great idea.

We are working on a welder so that you won't need to weld with your hands. Lack of a welder model never had anything to do with being stubborn, just a matter of limited resources and priorities, and having a welder model has never been that high of a priority compared to everything else.

Not hands, mind-controlled nanites.
Midi-chlorians? :P
+1
Lol, SWTOR comes out soon. Wait for that =)

nice
I can't wait to see it.
On a side note:
Why is everyone so excited for welders?

Welding is serious business fool!

Couple reasons:

It currently looks silly when your welding a Marine and sparks are flying but your not doing anything to initial sparks (visually)

The nostalgia value of the famous welder model :)

I still think Marines should be able to weld and move at the same time without having to chase down Marines and have them sit still in order to weld successfully. But hey, what do I know! :P

I think it's also kind of handy little communication method. In NS1 firing off a couple of short welder sounds says "Going to weld you now!" better than any mic yelling will ever do. It's a bit similar kind of subtle squad design as TF2 and L4D use a lot to communicate team actions.
It's also probably easier to make the targetting system reliable since you don't have to use armorys and PGs and such through the same method.

Once UWE is able to add icons to players communication(s), when a Marine call for a Weld, it will notify (visually) other team mates that welding is needed. This will eliminate having to voice someone to perform the tasks (which in pubs, 9x out of 10 never happens).
This is also needed for Aliens as most players do not know how to associate the grunts and moans of the Alien classes to a specific task (such as healing).

There are a few things with that though... I'd rather not have auto voice sounds like that when you need something. I hate using the medkit voice command or a similar for a weld, too many Skulks will be chewing at your feet when you call for stuff like that when you're trying to be sneaky! Of course they are user activated, so it's not that big a deal and can also lure in them skulks to trick them :P
Mic > ingame sounds ANY time of ANY day!
... requires above head voice icon though so you actually know who the hell is speaking!

and that's why you don't play this game in an organized way. Issuing a Medpack/Ammo order allows the commander to keep his Squads full stocked on health and ammo.
Not everybody wants to hear people saying "medpack; ammo; WELD ME" every 5-10seconds in a game. So in theory, In-Game Communication > Microphone Usage

Well not quite :)
The mic is of course primarily for tactical information and strategy, but when it comes to pub play it is invaluable to give some hints to the commander or other players to help ya out, while not giving away your position with loud ingame speech when you're on low on health or ammo. Obviously you're not spouting "MEDKIT" "AMMO" or "WELD ME!" on the mic all the time, unless you're a mic spammer, but they tend to use music or other weird ###### and end up on mute mostly...
The HUD for the comm is indeed in need of more stuff to improve the overview of health and armor status. Noisy marines tend to get company really quick in the form of unwanted party poopers! Of course map watchers will spot you in any case, seems somewhat overpowered them icons on the map sometimes :D
