<div class="IPBDescription">"gaming"</div>Everybody know how it feels staying on a empty server or just visit it.
The solution is very simple:
Arcade machines!
Sounds weird but i am sure, it can help a lot to let people join and stay on a server, until its full.
Example:
There 2-3 Arcade Machines.
So people can play on them (just simple ones)
If people join a game, the machines turn off, so you have to join, otherwise you can not on these.
Ideas for Arcade Machines:
2 Player versions:
- Pong
- Tetris
1 player:
- tetris
- space invaders
- pacman
- like "peggle"
- pinball
of course to prevent copyright, with custom names and graphics.
How keep players playing that?
Maybe a highscore ^^
But it could people be idiots if they want play on that to beat the highscore, on the other hand, they can join if the server is empty to beat the highscore.
Anyway, what do you think?
Example with pinball:
i have no idea if it would work but creating some very tiny place (arcade game room) under the ready room, which is the "arcade game", so you just see through a camera like the commander.
So you press "use" on a arcade machine and your view moves to the "arcade game room"
You controll with the left and right mouse the two flippers and with "jump" you start the "Plunger" (shoot ball).

Comments
But it may be counter productive. You will see 23 1/16 servers because ppl want to break the highscore ;-).
The pawns can be Macs and drifters

First of all, I don't think this is something UWE should be spending time on at this time, but with that said...
You wouldn't need an extra room for the arcade room itself. We're working with LUA here, rendering us with a very customizable game.
Take WoW for an instance. There's loads of minigames that are run through the players HUD(or user interface as it's called in WoW).
All of those games are created by creative fans.
In other words, anyone with LUA "know how" can make this happen. We'll still need something to trigger the games from though, so some sort of hotkey or even a placable prop with a trigger attatched to it could do the trick. Heck, even a command written in the console of chat works, but that might not be as user friendly.
I also absolutely love the idea about using in-game props as game elements.
It might be a cheesy idea, but I think you'll find more people who like cheesy ideas than people who don't like them, just as long as they're done with some style and not just tacked together.
* 1 Onos (you), running around trying to eat...
* The juicy Marines, while being chased by...
* The HA Marines with HMG
Would be quite funny:p
You scoot around the bottom of the screen as a Gorge, taking cover behind your Crags against the marines slowly moving down and from side to side while dropping grenades that don't explode.
Occasionally a giant MAC floats across the top of the screen.
Then imagine for the zombies, a normal zombie should be a skulk, the cone head zombies are gorges, bucket-head zombies would be fades. The Gargantuan zombie would be an Onos.
*EDIT*
Go n00b photoshop skillz!

...who said UWE should do that?
I post it in "NS2 General Discussion" because i want to talk with the community doing some nice arcade machines.
sadly i haven't the Lua skills.

That's why I continued with the suggestion of the community stepping in ;)
The popcap games for wow are actually a fun story. Originally made by a single person at first unrelated to popcap.
Once a popcap employee discovered the addon(bejeweled) while playing wow, asked himself the question "Sue or hire?" and ended up hiring the guy.
heroman. That PvZ picture is baller! ^^
+1
Yeah I was on it last night, quite a good server!!
With Gorge as the bowling ball and... marines or Fades as pins?
...or a Gorge in the ready room can do his slide thing and knock over anybody else in the rr. :D
