I don't like this idea, it would make the hydras even stronger, and they are pretty strong at the moment. A few of them is able to hold off marines without GLs, which are very expensive to get. And ARCs are even more expensive. Hydras are cheap, and available from game start. In the early game, this suggestion would make hydras in high places invulnerable to marines, as they can't reach them with axes. It would only make taking out hydras even more painful for marines, which I feel is completely unnessesary. If an area is getting bombarded by grenades, it's up to the rest of your team to save your hydra farm if they want it saved. You would not want destroyed sentries to spawn back for no cost after you killed them either. Silly example, as sentries are stronger, cost another type of resources and will most likely not be build in the early game, but same principle. Instead, as said before, I would like to see the damage upgrades for aliens affect hydras. So they scale into late game as well.
I like the idea, I personally feel hydra's do not maintain their worth from the early game to the late game. This is because they are super strong in the beginning, and very weak in the end.
Reducing their armor/health, and coupling it with this "seed" or "rooting" idea nerfs them in the early game and buffs them in the end. The only way to kill a hydra in this situation would be to remove the infestation of the spot they live in. Also, I think a flamethrower should be able to kill their roots without taking the infestation out as well to buff flamers just a bit, and make them a viable tech option in more early game builds.
I'm also entertaining the idea of having them grow back very slowly, but this process can be sped up significantly with our fatty's favorite alt-fire.
I like the idea of this a lot, from a conceptual game world standpoint. I think it makes a lot of sense for the Hydras to grow back and it would add a really interesting and dynamic feeling to the alien side.
I also think it would be a nightmare to balance and to keep the marines from feeling cheated from a game play standpoint. Also think about how gorges tend to Hydra farm now, whats going to happen if hydras farm themselves? It would just get clogged and impossible to move around, probably shut down video cards.
Maybe if there were a constant drain of resources on the gorge's PRes, or if every gorge could only have as many hydras as there are hives and not being gorge long enough would kill the hydra. But this would make the hydra less of an atmospheric and more like a turret from TF2. While usability is really important, so's the atmosphere of the game.
+1 for the concept. currently, it takes usually only 1 rifle clip to take down a hydra (10 res!). but i think all weapons should be able to destroy the roots as some roots might be unreachable for axes. sure, you can destroy the mini-cysts instead, but gorges have a huge range for easily replacing them. imo the roots should have about as much health as the stalks, so 2 rifle clips will be enough to take them down if you want to finish them for good.
