I understand the CPU is the weak point of my system. I run UE3 games with 30-50 frames no problem, I think NS2 is just really cpu hungry.

Also, the E2180 is a core 2, it just has a chopped down L2 cache, which doesn't usually matter much.

    Indeed it is ;)

-Further proven by the fact that graphic settings don't really have an impact currently on FPS performance. PC's have to brute force it a bit, in this department your CPU is seriously lacking. And I do mean seriously!

Those other games are GPU optimised, so your HD6850 is saving your CPU from doing loads of stuff. That's why you get decent performance in those games mostly :)

    sidenote:
If you happen to have Team Fortress 2 installed (free now :P), try and see if you get low FPS in that game. TF2 has always been CPU hungry. In this case you'll see it in a final product.

Did some testing in TF2, on a populated server I had an average of about 80-90 frames, lowest I saw was 60, at 1680x1050, otherwise default settings.

    phenom II x4 955 BE @ 3.20
    4 gigs ram
nvidia gtx 470 latest nvidia drivers as of 12/3/11 (bf3 fixes and such)
    win7 64bit

getting 15-25 fps no matter the res or gfx level. changing quality has no effect. used to be 30+
temps are all normal (plus its colder than normal here so temps are running 45-50 on both cpu and vid card.
nothing o/c cept the stock o/c on the card.

getting over 100 in the waiting room though, can we add the hive there instead? lol

Is this just on your own server?

Also, a temp fix might just be to disable the graphics effects in console (i.e. r_bloom false, r_shadows false, r_instancing false, r_atmospherics false). I think some of the problem is that atmospherics are on by default now, so even though they are much improved performance-wise, if your system was strained before it could add problems.

I tried turning off bloom and atmospherics had virtually no impact on performance (although I like the graphics better with bloom off).

I don't think turning off graphic options does help, when your CPU is the bottleneck.

Bug - some server-only data were mistakenly marked as being shared with the client. Will be much better in the next patch.

I'm having lots of troubles with the performance, might just be my specs but I never had any problems with any games so far...

4 gig ram ( although I'm only running 32bit OS)
    Processor: Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz (4 CPUs)
Nvidia Geforce 9800GT ( old but never had these kind of problems before)
maybe I just underestimated the power needed for this game

The framerate is <u>horrible</u> maybe 15 fps, regardless of the graphic settings, I can play on highest or lowest and get the same result.
However I don't seem to have the random crashes and missing textures when I play on lowest.

I noticed the allocated memory is about 2k/5k MB used when I check the task manager, what does that indicate?

I'm thinking about getting a new gcard but maybe that wont be enough, I appreciate any hints!

processor: AMD Phenom II p650 dual core 2.60ghz
    4.0gb memory
    64bit opertaing system

AMD m880G w/ ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250
    .......................................................................
The picture and detail seems fine, un playable delay and choppines.. Delay in text and mouse movements. I think I was getting 5 FPS on Inversion server.... so unplayable and frustrating use of money! can I get help with ideas please? :]

<!--sizeo:7--><span style="font-size:36pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo-->IF you have a Bad CPU... Here is an important FPS-boosting performance-boosting solution (albeit a temporary and somewhat unpleasant one)<!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->

Step 1: Create a desktop shortcut of your NS2.exe file

Step 2: Edit the properties of that shortcut file.

Step 3: On the line that says <b>"C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\natural selection 2\NS2.exe"</b> make it say <b>"C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\natural selection 2\NS2.exe" -nosound</b> by adding -nosound to the very end of it.

Step 4: Click OK, then enter NS2 from that shortcut file.

As a result of all this, you will not have sound, but you will most likely experience some, and in some cases major, FPS improvement.

I have that exact same specification in my laptop. It's not good enough to play NS2, it's just not powerful enough.

    EDIT:

As an example, the most grapically up to date game it can play is TF2, low settings, 25FPS solid.

[EDIT] In response to fmpone [/EDIT]

Well that was a bit of a weird post, but to humor you I went ahead and at least tried it: no (measurable) improvement.

Which isn't really a surprise. The main issue at hand is the Lua-VM, which requires in excess of what a single core can provide yet cannot otherwise be multithreaded in any way. So turning off other systems will not mitigate this problem, unless of course you have a single-core CPU, in which case it might clear some load for the Lua-VM to take advantage of.

It helps me because I have a bad CPU.

You sold it like a "one size fits all", although suggestions on what type of PC it might work on. IE. if you believe it's lower CPUs, what is your own?

Haha, sweet. I suppose it could be an improvement if you're sitting on a single-core or a very slow dual-core.

Define a bad CPU? The word is relative.

    He has a < 1.86Ghz Core1 I believe. Might be a core2duo. But pretty damn slow.
