A new perspective.
I have never been involved with game development. So, when i watched the below link it shocked me a little and made me appreciate UWE even more. Might be an old video for some of you but still very relevant.

thats not just in big game companys...its also in a lot of other stuff...
What do you think where did you "superb awesome clothes" come from?
China working kids...or hard working other people who get a "JOKE" of money.
Did you drink coffee?
Well then you support maybe hard working people who get like 1% of all the money the big companys made with selling this.
Thats the cruel world, money reigns.
UWE is a tiny team, they got a lot of money and support by the fans, they can decide how they work but yes i guess working on their own game isn't pretty easy, you have to keep up the folks mood.

Realy don't understand me wrong but why you say thank you?
I realy like Natural Selection and the work of UWE is great but we paid for it and not just a little.
What i want to say, why did you say thank you to a tiny developer and not to a big?
South park (i bet i know your first reaction, but its true!) did a very great satiric episode (like always) about the mind of people about "big" and "small" company's
Someday the small company will be big (maybe) and then its big, so did they deserve to be kicked with feet because they are big now?
NO!
A tiny company is the same important like a big company.
If you think like "but the tiny company need the money more" then someday the big company will disapear because they have a lot to pay to their employes and on.
or they will be small again

I think this video what you post is a good point to respect EVERY DEVELOPER (not publisher) the realy hard work is with the developer not with the publisher.
Same with company's who did clothes and all the other stuff.
thats just my mind, i hope you understand my point.
i love ns2 and i realy support UWE thats why i buy the game like 3 times (2 default and 1 special) but sorry i can not say thank you for doing their jobs.
i can say "THANK YOU for their support and their great awesome free NS1.
so don't hate me for saying the truth even with my bad english.

exactly, we get a game but in my opinion i would pay 15$ for the game (like every indie game) and the other money is for their support, ns1 and a way to say THANK YOU.
Thats the reason why like 90% of the sells are the special edition, people want to say thank you for their great FREE work on ns1 (i guess, because thats my mind).

Its a funny thing, people would pay for a free game then for a game which cost money.
For example:
Some of you maybe notice the angry video game nerd?
he sell stuff like dvds and such but not much people buy them.
Now he want do a movie and wanted to collect 75.000$ here you can see what he get, because people love his free Videos :
http://www.indiegogo.com/Angry-Video-Game-Nerd-The-Movie
Just for info., i guess he make a lot of money with his "free" videos but people don't know.
Anyway, i hope you get my point.

The uwe team is great, they did a very nice job.

I understand what you are saying and i did leave a lot of what i implied by "thank you" up to the reader, My fault. What i meant by Thank you is creating their game their way. Their own engine, their own company, their own rules. They didnt sell out the idea or take the easy (more constricting road a.k.a. valve's engine) way out.

And after all of this, they still regularly communicate with a community that only sees 1/4 (if that) of the picture and deals with the mood swings of many gamers who have little clue what goes into game design (me being one). They still strive day to day to put out a quality product and improve on their original idea which was NS1.

Just giving needed props where it is due. Much like parents telling their kids they love them more regularly can have an effect, even though the kids know the parents love them, it is always nice to hear.

This was the purpose of my post =)

I really enjoyed this, thanks for posting RisingSun. I found the 'immature industry' argument particularly insightful.

Many of us work in very mature industries. I know I do - The big tower I work in is a well oiled money making machine built on centuries of build up of professional bodies, best practices, academic resources, and inter-generational wisdom.

Gaming started in the 70's and only really exploded in the naughties. None of those resources are available yet - You can't have inter-generational wisdom when you're the first generation to do it.

UWE is blazing a trail. Its fantastic to watch. Perhaps there will be a 'Game Development, the UWE Way' textbook one day!

Thanks RisingSun.

I didn't watch the video, but have worked in slavish type game jobs before so I know the drill. Most of us have, actually.

Working at UW isn't always a cakewalk, but at the end of the day we're making a living doing something we're passionate about. And yes, on our own terms. Who knows how long we'll be able to keep doing it, but it's been a total blast so far.

Onwards and upwards.

Im really happy that i did not have to make the experience so far (watched the video). My previous jobs as programmer wasn't in the gaming industry, which is maybe the reason i did not experience what was shown in the video, but im glad that i don't have to with uwe :)

@NS2HD - Thanks for the good videos and reporting from the trenches of UWE. I enjoyed the inside look even more after watching the above video (def worth your time Flayra, when you get a chance :P ).

I am actually more excited now than ever. I got to upgrade my system after almost 2 years. Running a G74S series 3D Republic of Gamers laptop (Intel Core I7 2670QM, 2.2 Ghz. 12gb ram, Nvidia 580m). Upgrading from an Alienware MX17 is a night and day difference. I now see how everyone can actually play and ENJOY the experience. Running a smooth 30-50 frames and a constant 25-30 with 3d on. For those with lower end computers, as mine was, this game is worth the wait for optimization.

God that made me laugh for some reason, please don't edit it.

And props for UW
For not just building a game but
building a team
building cool tools
and being entertaining

To the next patch and onward.
