Crag ability to give armored shells, or other coatings, for some aliens

So, the crag looks awesome with the way it's like a shell with alien bits sticking out.
But, I was also thinking that it seems a waste of that cool aesthetic not to try and use it elsewhere.
So I was thinking that one of the abilities of the crag could be to ad an armor coating onto certain aliens, probably limited to skulks. This coating would give the skulk an armored shell/exoskeleton that looks similar to the crag.
Gameplay-wise I'm not sure of the exact effect, or how to let players get the effect.
It could just give a set amount of temporary HP that always counts as armored, while being shot, this temporary health is removed before any other HP or armor, and once depleted the shell cracks and shatters off the skulk, giving the players on both sides an audible and visual cue. Shooting an armored alien also will give a different audio cue.
This idea could also be expanded further for aliens, making the crag almost like an armory, but for defensive coating upgrades. With a number of specialized coatings such as fire proof coatings.
As for how players get this. Some of the effects could be commander activated. But it'd also be interesting to have players walk up and buy coatings from the crag with resources, or replenish those coatings. I'd rather not have it be another upgrade you buy while gestating to a new form because time spent gestating is time not actually playing.
What do you think?
EDIT: I was also thinking of some other gameplay nuances that could be added with this. The armored shells could provide extra protection against guns like the shotgun, which should do massive damage to unarmored organic targets, but are also known for low armor penetration due to the smaller individual pellets having lower momentum.
There could be downsides to applying various coatings. A skulk with a full armor coating might not be able to walk on walls, but isn't slowed down otherwise.

*Which is for all aliens classes though
The crag should be demoted to an enlarged cyst instead, but providing no infestation. This would be usefull for endgame battlegorges to stay heal and attack in the middge of an assault while not instantly dieing from miniguns and what not. Tradeoff would be the extra cost and being unable to escape. You could make it take 10 personal res and give them to the team to prevent griefing. Another fun thing would be if you could plant a few, maybe 3, hydras on the shell :)
Love this idea
