    You seriously want to do a direct ripoff from starcraft?
    We have the Shift coming at some point, it should do something like it.

    To be honest, UWE already expressed interest some years ago, in an alien infestation 'canal'. Aliens would be able to enter an opening in the infestation, travel through it at speed to another opening. Somewhat similar to a phase-gate, except not instant and actually requires player involvement. (But I don't know if that's still in the plan.)

    Besides, Natural Selection is
    a) obviously inspired by StarCraft
    b) significantly different from StarCraft in terms of overall gameplay mechanics
    so any "rip-off" would be considered a homage.

    Hell, you might even draw in SC fans that way.

    I always imagined that like a "funnel" opening on a wall, that opens up for a small alien such as a gorge, and then over a few seconds slips through the funnel and out the other side. During the transfer, the vision would be blurred and bubbling, as if looking in a inhomogeneous liquid, while you see the other side. Think of it like in portal, but there is a distance between the portals, and the movement is slowed while going through.

    Schimmel already built a working model of this for NS2 in his NS2 prototyping mod.

    Regardless, this has no place the way the game currently works. Aliens and Marines are designed to play differently.
