Ok after seeing the effects of 1.90 minus obvious balance issues and the need to be hot fixed, I found that with the addition of mines, the game turned into a lock down, base building game. The game play felt drastically changed, and from the last 3 games (1.90) with untouchable bases, it really took the fun out of the game. All you would need to do is move to a point, setup up a small base as marines and wait. You then push forward from this base and work your way into the enemy base and win. Not with standing the marines walking over aliens like they weren't there due to huge amour reduction, games where you build heavily defended bases or points which you have to try and assault, just aren't that fun. Yes its about team play and getting the right classes to compliment each other, but all lining up to work down an enemy base defense is just plain boring.
Yes there was a need to give marines on the move more firepower as fades were ripping them a new one, but that's what jet packs and heavy amour were for. Also catalyst packs will be coming soon giving marines much more mobility. The nano shield was also a brilliant idea. But adding things like mines which are defensive abilities, just sucks the fun out of a game when you cant get past a certain lock down point on a map. A focus more on offensive abilities rather than base building, point defensive abilities I think really makes the game that much more enjoyable.
Instead of mines, just giving marines the ability to carry one grenade would be a good idea I think. Yes they get grenade launchers, but I'm talking about just one grenade that you can always grab from an armory from the start. It would be slower to pull a pin, and throw a grenade than just automatically shoot 7 from a gun, so the launcher would still play its part. Its basically mine that more mobile, so adds more to the faster pace on the move combat. And instead of having turrets that make themselves, maybe making temporary turrets that a marine can carry or deploy for a short while. That means to get defense up you still have to work for it and its slower, meaning its more a focus on the marine ability and not the bases. That way it takes the game to a full blown battle on the move.
So yeah my suggestion is not adding more defensive abilities to the game, it doesn't need them. Add more offensive abilities.

Rather than remove mines and replace them with one-time-use grenades, I'd just put them further along the technology tree, and increase their individual cost.
Maybe limit mines to 1 purchase per player per life, so people stop going back to the armoury constantly reloading mines.
