999 Ping after 10 seconds

After patch 189 my ping starts to climb as soon as i join a server from about 50ms to 999ms in about 10 seconds then the game just completely crashes, i play on the same network as a friend and he is able to connect and play fine, unsure why i have this issue.

I have tested firewalls off, my network, updated drivers, updated and uninstalled NS2 and disabled steam overlay, neither have resolved the issue.

PC Specs:
Windows 7 64bit
8 gb Ram
Geforce 560 ti
i5-2500k

Roughly 50 mb internet connection

I did think to post in the tech issue thread but i never got any help last time, so i am sorry for posting in here but i really want to play NS2 again! :(
Thanks for any help!

Could you try it using the net_stats command in the console and check your ping there, it is faster and more accurate then the scoreboard. And to see if you're seeing any choke

100% is bad, if you're seeing this right before the crash. Could you then also send in the bug-report and call it something like "100% choke issue". It is an issue that has been resolved for the most part, but still appears from time to time. The devs could really use more data on it :)

It helps if you're using windowed mode to have full control over your PC during the crash, especially if you're on one monitor

If the bug send window doesn't appear you could perhaps post the log file here, you can find it by going to run in your starte menu and type:

    %appdata%

Then locate the natural selection 2 folder and have a look at log.txt

Also, there are cases where the options.xml file is not removed after a new build, since it resides in the %appdata% location.

Using Kouji's method of getting to "%appdata%", browse for the Natural Selection 2 folder, open it and delete options.xml. You will lose your current NS2 configuration settings, but this will ensure you're running the latest options.xml file with all the newest updates!

Let us know if you get it fixed and how!

Will verifying game data in steam menu also ensure you have all the latest options.xml file with all the newest updates?
(If that makes any sense at all..)

I don't think so. However, I could be wrong (maybe someone else can give some clarification). The reason I believe it does not is because this file is located outside of the Steam directory. Steam attempts to verify the integrity of GCF files and in NS2's case, the core files and compares the differences with the build Steam has. When a file inside the main directory returns a different hash value, that file is reported as "corrupt" or "incorrect" and is replaced.

Consider the options.xml to be exactly the same thing as your Quake config.cfg or your Counter-Strike config.cfg file. Normally, these files are ignored by Steam because they hold your personal settings.

NS2 is unlike the above two games in the sense that it uses the Windows user profile to store data in. You might even find that after deleting NS2 your personal values are still saved, though not in all cases. I'm sure later down the road, the file will hopefully be stored within the NS2 directory itself so that when you delete NS2 or update NS2 the file is overwritten. Unfortunately, if that does happen, each build, you'll need to set your config.xml back up from scratch, but this can also be done via the in-game menu.

This may be out there, but I have issues with certain games because of my router. I notice NS2 is one of the games my router (a WRT54GL...don't get one regardless of how popular they seem) has issues with -- along with BF3, BF2BC, Bloodline Champions, and a couple others. For some reason I will get very bad spikes in latency on whichever process is having the issue.

No amount of forwarding, firewall adjustment (OS or hardware), adjusting MTU size, etc solves it for me. I went to DD-WRT firmware some time ago which alleviated the issue for games like TF2 and CS, but I still have the problem with certain games, though in the minority now.

    Just a thought.
