So, I predict NS2 is going to make it big. Once we're at 1.0, this is going to be a very popular game and it's going to do well.
NS might become a franchise. And franchises need expanded universes.
Does Natural Selection have an expanded universe?
If not, we should create one.

Not sure what this expanded universe stuff is (or what Raneman means by it), but if it's like the Star Wars Extended Universe, then it's a collection of officially-licensed but third-party works (games, books, etc.) that use the originals as a starting point and expand the plot.

Expanded Universes are for series of movies and television shows; games just have backstory, side-stories, and lore.

When I'm doing it I'm going to need feedback from the developers on how they see certain things work, or certain events took place.
I am making my Hunter mod, which is an evolution of the NS2 universe, a few hundred years in the future. This will happen organically with the game, but it would be good to get a NS2 fan-fic/creative writing forum going now so people can contribute.
And the manual! It's awesome: http://www.lunixmonster.org/hosted/grayduck/oldmanual/
Siege turret is still one of my favourites.

QUOTE

Data: developed for use against enemy defensive emplacements, and made to operate independent from a nano-network or even human control, one siege turret can completely halt alien development (if placed strategically, and defended). Siege turrets generate their own gravitational field effect, which can register all objects with more than a few pounds of mass within its radius. The shape-signatures of the objects are matched against its database, and any hostile patterns are eliminated. Alien structures have been successfully added to this database. The turret manipulates its gravitational field to induce a catastrophic effect – much like a sonic boom – that ignores intervening barriers and walls. [...]

That's a great game mechanic there, the players are clones of real marines. The feedback from each 'life' is felt by the original, thus he gains experience of the battlefield. Even though his clones die often, his overall experience increases. This covers the same player respawning all the time game mechanic, and the fact the players get better over time, a real-life immersion break in the story :)

How about we write the NS2 manual in the style of the old NS manual, but with a NS2 look, as a community? If we could make it web formatted, it could be linked to from the site, wiki and possibly even the game itself.
The idea above is a good starting point for the IP. We have the developer design docs, so we can find the ideas behind everything, and we have access to the code to be able to note down the tech tree, and pick up dev notes as to the way things are supposed to work.
What do you think? Good idea?
