Meta-server

Players could join the meta-server, waiting for other players to join. Being on the meta-server would look somewhat like a readyroom, being able to see and talk to other players waiting in that area. Once enough players were on, the game would automatically push that group of players to an actual ns2 server. Players could still directly join an NS2 server if they wish.
How it might work:
- There would be one (official?) meta-server per each region of the world. So, maybe one for east and west coast US. One for east and west Europe. One for Australia. etc. (As demand goes up, more regional servers in uncovered areas could be added).
- Each regional server would have a list of "quality" servers which both perform well and give good pings for that area.
- When NS2 starts, it would initially connect you to the closest regional server. (It would determine this by pinging them or something).
- Once enough people join (6?), players would be moved to an actual ns2 server. (There would be a short delay with a prompt indicating the server name, allowing the players to cancel if they wish to stay on the meta-server).
Options:
- Players who do not like auto-joining a meta-server could disable it or pick a different default meta-server.
- Players on a meta-server would have the option of auto-joining existing games in that server's list if a slot opens on an occupied server (with 6 or more players). This would prevent the need to be constantly retrying.
- Players could also specify that they do not wish to be auto-joined into a game server.
- Hopefully, the meta-server could allow for a significant number of players as it could be separately hosted and would not have the overhead associated with running a standard ns2 server.
- Regular NS2 servers with only one or two players could even be (optionally) set up to ask the players to go back to the meta-server if the game stays at that number for too long.
I think this would both provide an easy path for inexperienced players, while also allowing for a place for everyone to congregate before playing.
