Lost that Marine'ing feeling

<div class="IPBDescription">Do you feel like Kharaa Fodder?</div>Ugh, that beaming in thing makes me feel sick every time!

Made it though, me, a load of Marines and a big metal box. Supplies? No?

So the only bit of kit they send us in with is a big metal box for the Commander to check his emails in? Couldn't they bolt on an IP? Maybe a single Armory point? Just for ammo and health? It would make the box more useful for the rest of us? It's up to the Commander! What the hell is he going to get instead? What if he is a bit slow getting into the box? Sorry, getting into the CC? CS! Whatever it is!

Wait a minute, only four magazines! No Marine would go to war with only four mag..., oh, I won't live long enough to need more, fair enough. Still, why do I waste time cocking the weapon when I still have a round in the chamber, I'm sure I should only do that when I empty the magazine. Training, eh?

Let's have a look around..., who the hell designed this HUD? It looks pretty, but you could have told him these aliens can run on the walls, ceilings, fly and blink! Cluttering my peripheral might look good in the adverts (do you want to know more?), but it is a death sentence out here.

So this Power Node thing is important because none of this other stuff has a UPS built into it to give us a bit of a chance? No? Ok.

Back to this HUD thing, I know I complained a bit earlier, but that SatNav blue line thing is cool, no confusion there. How about a few hints about other stuff? Say, blue spots to tell me how many team mates I have near me, makes me feel like I am in a squad. Better still, red spots that tell me my squad can see a certain number of aliens. Just squash all the HUD info bottom and centre, don't need to worry about not seeing my feet properly. Arrgh, where are my feet!

Lasers! That's what we need, laser sights so we could see each others sight lines so the squad would know what angles are being covered. Make them virtual, in the HUD only, so the aliens can't see them. Also two colours, one when just looking and another when they fire, gives me a clue on where to look! But not red, red is rubbish when we go to emergency lighting. Oh, and don't show my laser sight, I know where I am looking.

Can't I also get a floating health bar on things in my HUD, so I can see what to defend or who needs an armour repair? Always thinking, I am.

How about a friendly fire lock on the weapons, Bob is getting fed up with me shooting him in the back and it would save my rounds for when I at least have a chance of hitting something. Mind you, he would be even more fed up if the armour was not as good against bullets as it is. Pity it ain't so hot with teeth, spikes and claws.

Also, why can't I walk backwards properly in this armour? It kind of feels like I have to moonwalk as the aliens charge me! The aliens are quick enough as it is without it needing to limit my movement.

The flashlight looks awesome, be good if the boffins could also make it emit a frequency that blinded the aliens other vision mode. Bit like the old AvP 'Murder in the Dark' multiplayer level, normal vision versus image intensifier. Does remembering that make me old?

This IP thing spins around like crazy when we get replacements, it looks like it could take a limb off, but doesn't seem to hurt them aliens. Couldn't we weld some sharp and pointy bits on to do a bit of damage? Whilst on the subject, this IP thing produces a Marine out of nothing, the PG produces a Marine out of nothing and that beacon produces lots of Marines out of nothing. Why does each method seem totally different? Just asking.

To be honest though, it is great fun out here shooting stuff, burning stuff, hacking stuff, it's what I signed up for. Just wish the guys back at HQ would get an advisor in with some combat experience, one of those Spec Ops guys in black armour, I heard you have to kill an Onos with just your thumb to get that armour! Might help them understand the narrative of being a Marine, not just the tick box requirements.

Oh, one more thing, when did any one last see an ARC being deployed?

I like the subject of lasers!

    Who doesn't love lasers!

That's what my post was really about, wait, not lasers, the feeling you get when you talk about lasers.

The aliens feel right. When you play as aliens it feels great, the highs and lows, the arc from skulk to fade. The whole gameplay style is awesome! Yes, things needs adjusting as it develops, but I still love it!

The Marines are just as good in content, but I don't get the same feeling when I play as them. The high/low and arc thing is still there, but it feels more often than not, a grind.

Take the current power node complaints, I like the PNs as content, but they can become a grind during play.

Just wanted to get people to think how they would tighten up how the Marines play, make it more slick. I want the game to get to the point that when I go random in the RR, the little 'let's go' feeling i get as an alien, happens when I am a Marine too.

Hmm.. I agree NS2 should have more Squad-like emphasis. And an uncluttered hud. Always hated the super slow backwalk walking. I understand why the devs did it, but isn't there some better way to do it..

I'm sure a minimal GUI mod will be done at some point. The best would be to have a completely customizable GUI though.

I disabled all gui elements for marine (I wanted to to keep heatlh/armor but also got rid of it somehow) and played with it a bit, it really looks better, and it's more immersive. The best would be to have the health/armor on the marine model (like the ammo) and to move everything else on the C/tab keys. I also removed this +5 in the center of the screen when you get a kill.
