Worth it?

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for some very honest answers here, so please understand i'm not trying to "put down" this game in anyway. It's incredibly impressive what they've achieved.

Anywho, I've been tracking this games progress for the past few years. I hadn't bought it, because I was waiting for a more "complete " expierence. The latest trailer has convinced me though.

However ... I'm a college student and have a limited supply of money for games, before I make any decisions I have a few questions.

1) From what I read this game is a DX 9 game, are there any cards that are unsupported? (Specifically mobile graphics card, mine is a high end mobile card ATI 5870 mobility ... but there have been some issues with games)

2) Does this game feel "fresh" per game, that is ... does it feel repetitiveness / same experience in each map?

3) How is the community in terms of new people?

4) Do you feel the game is worth $35? Why and why not?

5) Are there active beta servers?

I'm hoping people will be honest, and not just state " omg super epic game is awesome fun!"

Thanks,

    IMO

    1) There are a lot of people still unable to play the game. If you have upgraded your comp in the last year you should be fine (for at least loading the game, not sure on the FPS). I also play on a laptop and my GTX 560m runs it flawlessly.

    2) All the tech is not in yet an a lot of the alien side roles are confused. So yes it becomes repetitive. Balance issues are fix some times and content is now being added. Content is new and needs to be flushed out. I think we are truly in Beta status now with some more tech to be added. End game is still lacking the in "overall" game experience, but it is a beta. Look at D3 with only a small portion of the game (i.e. classes will play different at max level).

    3) The community is truly top notch. Even the negative ones are good people who care about this game, me included. People are defensive most times and you have two camps. Those that was an NS 1 4.0 and the NS Reborn crowd. Still both sides have good points and suggestions. We do get wrapped up in opinion a little much though. If you need help there are those who will gladly do so.

    4) The game is WELL worth $35 dollars. I have purchased over 8 copies and given 7 out. Even if i am unhappy with the direction of the game i still have hope for NS:Spark (NS 3.0 remade for Spark).

Bottom line. It is the beta of a small team. They are not EA or Blizzard and give it their all as a labor of love. As much as i disagree with current events and some planned additions, i respect the hell out of them for putting this game together and striving the way they do with the resources they have.

Edit* Thought about it and after Uncle Sam was so generous with tax season i thought I'd make you #9. Welcome to the UWE Family. Check your mail for your key.

    Hi there,

I'm a college (engineering) student too so keep that in mind (although if I spent half the time studying as I do playing video games in general...)

    As for your questions...

    1) I'm not sure, you'll have to wait for someone with more knowledge.

    2) It can kind or vary. There are patches where I'll put the game down till the next update because of balance/low frames/gets stale, etc, but with recent improvements to tram, new mineshaft, and new content, I expect to be playing a lot, lot more, especially as I hope to see some optimizations being chugged out in the next coming months. When the game is feature complete, with more official/community maps, I don't see it being stale at all, especially if you're inclined to get into organized matches.

    3) There was a new guy last night who was asking a bunch of questions and myself and another were helping him out. I'd say it most are pretty - very nice to new guys (we all know the community needs to grow), but if you're totally new and jump into the comm chair and just start doing random stuff, don't expect to be liked much haha. Comm, especially for marines, is very important.

    4) Yes I feel the game is worth 35 and I can just barely play it. I still get frustrated because when I get killed its not that I got out skilled (which I don't mind), but it's most likely because I got out framed (fps). Once my frames get up to an acceptable level in combat, and I can have a screen resolution larger than the third lowest (lol), I'll definitely feel it's worth 35.

    5) Yes there are active servers. They usually taper off 2-3 weeks after an update to where it's one full one (16) and then usually like another servers worth of people starring at the browser waiting for a 10 person game to magically appear before they commit (lol). With the new content though, I feel like a lot more will be playing longer. Also, see this pic posted by Colonist from Thursday night (after latest patch release).

Either way, I'd suggest the game. I love it, it can only get better, and it's nice to support devs like this.

Game is worth 35$ ! The community is awesome and latter will release many additional plugins game modes and might even release completely something new.
But in your case i won't but game just jet, especially if u play on a Laptop, game is still in heavy development, movements are still laggy unresponsive and hit reg is still far from good. I would wait till final release or the first major pach after final release know how Unknown worlds like to push their alpha and beta test i assume final version might still be buggy.

The game now is testable not playable, not to an extent that you are having great fun, but if you can still play it if bugs won't bother you.

    1. Only super old cards are not going to support DX9. Keep in mind that if you're using a laptop you're really not going to get optimal results for NS2, unless you've got a ton of dedicated GPU memory. It normally doesn't work that way with laptops.

    2. Yes. Every single game is different. Every different commander you get has their own way of working with the team. Spawns are different, tech paths are different. Each player you play with is different, each and every weapon and map is completely different. It's pretty hard to get much more different.

    3. The community in terms of new people: They're ecstatic to get playing NS2! Since they're new, they have a bit to learn. Coming to the forums is a great way to learn from some of the best tactics and strategies from all the NS veterans around! We aren't your typical community, we have very passionate members here and NS/NS2 are sacred grounds.

    4. Yes. The fact of being able to mod the game into anything you absolutely want justifies the $35. If Garry's mod cost at least $15 at some point, doubling that, plus a couple more dollars, and getting an entire game with its sandbox should be more than worth it. UWE don't plan on developing a game and then leaving you in the dark. Unlike a lot of FPS games, bugs make it into the final release and just stay there.

    5. Yes. 24 hours a day. We have players from all over the world, including Australia, who are playing in the future! With the release of Gorilla there has been a huge influx of players, and they're eager to get playing NS2 just like you.

Nothing is more important than your schooling. If you're setting time aside to look into Natural Selection 2, I highly doubt you'll be disappointed with the end result. YES, it's totally worth it.

    1. dunno, but the game is heavily CPU based so GPU doesn't matter too much. a friend of mine was playing with an i7/gtx250 and his performance wasn't much worse than my 6950

    2. it will feel fresh for about 5-10 hours, after which it will largely feel repetitive. this will change as they continue to improve game balance

    3. community is fine, leagues ahead of MOBA communities, mostly friendly people and the game mechanics are simple enough to where people don't get mad when you screw up

    4. nope, i'd pay around 10 bucks for it though since it could eventually be good. you're paying 35 bucks to play a poorly optimized multiplayer-only unbalanced shooter that is largely only played on one map with very few active players. around release this could change, but that's just the way it is right now

    5. there is almost always one 16 player server that's active. right now due to the massive marketing with the gorilla trailer there are way more active players than usual, but it will drop off again to the usual in a few weeks.

you are unlikely to get any sort of playable framerate on a laptop. best case scenario is about 20-40 fps in its current state. it should work, but i don't know if you'll get an enjoyable experience. having said that, when NS1 first came out i was playing it on my old 486 at about 5-20 fps, and loving every choppy moment of it, so ymmv.
as for the community, it is generally very open to newcomers, except for a few "elite" players who you can safely ignore. ever since ns1 came out i think the community has been very welcoming to newcomers, because the learning curve of the game is quite high so you may not grasp a lot of game mechanics right off the bat, so people have had to teach each other along the way. "is the game fresh" - there's no way for me to tell you that because that's based on your own perception, and i don't know you.

is it worth $35? hell yes. i preordered the collector's edition ($40) and haven't regretted it at all. just be aware that if you buy now you're going to be playing a version of the game that's still under development. it's not going to be bug-free or complete in any way. however, it's also a great experience to be part of something that's growing sort of organically from your feedback. i love the fact that the devs actually read our comments in the forums and, if they have enough merit, actually change the game in accordance. not many places you can find that.

as for how many servers there are, this is a screenshot i took a minute ago:

addendum: i have vsync forced on which is why i've only got 55 fps

Gentlemen, I thank you for your honest replies. Let me comment on a few things.

I have no problem playing a beta experience, as it stands I work with a mod team / dev team on a indie game and a mod. I know how much effort is put into content.

A big thanks to RisingSun for helping me obtain a copy, awesome person.

Look forward to playing the game with you all.

Few other questions ... If there's a FAQ, my apoligies for missing it..

    1) Are there any bots present, IE: Multiplayer experience with bots on each side?

    2) Have any people made clans yet?

    Thanks guys.

there are very basic bots if you want to create your own server and enable cheats. other than that, the only "bots" or npcs would be drifters and mac's, which are only controllable by their respective comms.

    Not a problem =)

There are indeed clans already and some competitive groups who get together to scrim. NS2 Gather on Steam.
