Cant See Servers/Cant Make Server/Nothing works...

krutaskrutas Join Date: 2012-02-12 Member: 145193Members
So, ive tried EVERYTHING. Ive forwarded the ports like it said, ive tried launching it from the folder itself, and ive tried disabling steam overlay, and ive validated and made sure its all updated. I use Comodo Firewall and i disable it when i try to play NS2, and windows firewall is also disabled when i play.

I cant create a server, it just says "Could not create server"
I goto the server list, and 0 servers. Ive tried absolutely everything there can be to try to fix this... Could anyone possibly help..?

Post your log file, but it probably wont help. located in %appdata%/natural selection 2/log.txt (or similar)

I don't use Comodo, and never have, but my advice would be to uninstall it so you can test it out. Like you've said you've done everything, the game is not possibly corrupt after verifying (did you only verify, or delete and verify?), so the problem is to do with another configuration/program on your machine.

The Comodo-firewall works fine with NS2, Defense+ may be a different story, you might want to turn that off (if it is on).

Is this from a home connection? Do you have access to your router (and or firewall)? Im not really sure what ports that steam connection uses, maybe someone else can chime in.

Yes, this is a home connection, and i do have access to the router as well. Every other steam game works perfectly fine, and ive done whatever was needed with the ports, just like it said in the troubleshooting guide.

Bet you dont have a server.xml(appdata/roaming/natural selection 2) or some mistake in it.

    E.g.:
    <options>
    <lanGame>false</lanGame>
    <mapName>ns2_summit</mapName>
    <port>27015</port>
    <serverName>YourServername</serverName>
    <playerLimit>12</playerLimit>
    </options>

The Steam friends network has been going down intermittently for the past few days, which causes issues with many online Steam games. It could be that (in addition to the missing .xml).

Could anyone here please upload their server.xml to mediafire? i have no idea how to make a new xml document and im probably too stupid to figure it out anyway.

Open notepad and paste in the above information, and when you do save as, choose "Save as Type: any" and call the file server.xml

I was not aware you needed a server.xml file for creating a local server? I don't have one and can host locally.

    Have you had a look at - <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/wiki/index.php/Dedicated_Server" target="_blank">http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/wiki/inde...edicated_Server</a>

Error: Couldn't connect to Steam - is a standard message for me too, but the worst thing this does it that ppl cant join your server over the steam friends join server feature.
I think if it says something about "steam service" its the only interesting message, this would mean that ppl cant see your server - but this rarly happens(if, it usually works again after like 10-30min) => only if the steam network is down.

put the server.xml inside the C:\Users\yourwindowsusername\AppData\Roaming\Natural Selection 2 folder.

I now understand where the suggestion for the server.xml came from, it had confused me, but he doesnt want to make a server. From what I can see he just wants to join a server to play the game, and in testing, has discovered that he also cannot make a server.

oh ok, i thought he only wanted to open a dedicated server, whoops - i should read more carefully. (only really read post #4 which is a server log)

Even WITH the server.xml, it still decides not to work...
Ive been waiting a week to play this game, yet no luck... Any other suggestions? I REALLY want to play this game T_T

Sorry krutas, it looks like you have a couple more options, i know i may be stating the obvious, but i'll do it anyway.

    1) Wait for someone else to post who may have a solution.
    2) Since youve done everything suggested, go more drastic. How much do you want to play? Rule out your OS and format, start again.
    3) Keep waiting until a patch fixes the problem (if it is in fact a problem with NS2).

When you can't see the server list, quit the game and try like 5 times, eventually they will appear. I get the exact same bug, it's very annoying.

There is a list of servers on this website: <a href="http://play4dead.com/ns2/" target="_blank">http://play4dead.com/ns2/</a>

Can you try to join from the link on that site?

We use the same system most other multiplayer games on Steam use for querying for servers so I am not sure why it wouldn't work for you.
  • playerplayer Join Date: 2010-09-12 Member: 73982Members
Ah you're such a nubbin murphy, the query-port and the connect-port aren't the same for NS2, so it'll try to connect to the query port via that steam://-link, and it won't work simply. Also, I think the +connect-parameter for NS2.exe is still broken, so that too prevents it from working.

I've had this 2 or 3 times now.

I just clicked the back button, stare at the welcome screen for a few minutes, and then click Join again. Has worked every time so far.
