I'm not so sure NS2 is ever going to have a decently sized competitive community, if it is not suited for competitive play from the start. Sure, you can iron out most gameplay flaws with mods, but that'll create a niche for a niche game. At this early point, the goal of a ProMod should be to collect ideas that improve the gameplay and make UWE aware of these improvements so they can be implemented into vanilla NS2.
I also agree with Yuuki, ProMod is a terrible name. It's bound to piss off players that don't know much about the details.
I think its important to try to prevent the need of pro mod as much as possible, its not a good idea to split the game into 2 communities. We should do our best to create a game that works well both for public and competitive play, like ns1 was.

Just not always the other way around.
Saying SC1 was tailored for competitive play is downright false, considering how long after release it took for those kinda of communities to form. They did patch the core game to make it more balanced however. Making a "Pro-Mod" for NS2 is a bad idea, as it basically splits the already small community. The core game will need the overall balance to be a decent pub game, beyond that you will need to wait for 1.0 to make a determination for comp play. You guys are really over thinking this as the size of the comp community for this game hinges COMPLETELY on how the game plays both with regards to skill and performance on release. The only way NS2 could possibly ever need a Pro-Mod was if it made it really big in the e-sports scene.
IIRC 1.6 does not have a "Pro-Mod", and that mod for CS:S is dead. Do not make the same mistake with NS2.
