You could also try window mode to see if it is indeed just NS2 and not the OS.

As I said, total lockup requiring a reboot. I can't alt-tab, ctrl-alt-delt, ctrl-shift-esc etc... No other games do this, and NS2 did not before the last two versions. I haven't ever experienced freezing with this PC before.

It's running stock.

I'm using a 560ti with those same drivers and haven't noticed a thing.

Running Avast free antivirus, it does not have scans scheduled anywhere. My card is not ti.
Might I ask what difference that will make?
If it does, then it might be that there's some sort of call or process tied to exiting the game that bugs out.

Exactly! But my builds are 227 and 228.

QUOTE

I can't seem to recreate it from just opening and closing NS2, it must only be happening after long play sessions.

Also, true... but ONCE it unfreezed in 2 mins...

Mine is overclocked, but Arkanti had it on stock. I don't know if he's still experiencing this problems or not.
Also I don't know how to track this issue down, Windows does not make a note in the log in this regard. I'll try to use Process Monitor to record all events.
My tech spec:
Mon res: 1680x1050
GeForce GTX 560 Ti
CPU: Intel i5 2500k @4,5GHz
MB: MSI P67A-GD53
RAM: 4Gb DDR3 1600MHz
Windows 7 Ult x64 SP1
nVidia driver ver. 306.23
Latest build available from Steam. I just started playing today.
64-bit DxDiag
Note: The i7 Q740 uses Turbo Boost to throttle itself up to ~2.9Ghz
GTX 460M, Driver version: 306.97
In-game Settings:
Resolution: 1680x1050
Windowed Fullscreen mode
Vsync: Off
Everything is at the lowest settings in the graphics menu except for shadows, which are on (I was streaming the gameplay).
After I stopped streaming, I continued to play for a bit. Even while streaming, my temperatures were fine; nothing irregular.
When I was done, I exited via the in-game menus. When I came to the desktop, I noticed the Steam "Friends" window still had me listed as playing the game.
I went to close the Friends window - that's when the CPU locked up, mouse froze, Spotify eventually froze as well, and the CPU fan started to spin rapidly.
There was nothing I could do except a hard shutdown.
It has to be something in the code that causes this issue to happen when the game exits.
First of all, if synchronization with Steam Cloud is Enabled, then when you quit certain games they will begin to sync some info with Steam Cloud in a few moments. You can see this yellow status next to the game's name in the list:

It will happen always, even if you just start the game and close it immediately.
And I think that NS2 have some issue with it. Sometimes after quitting the NS2 we can experience this:

QUOTE

When I was done, I exited via the in-game menus. When I came to the desktop, I noticed the Steam "Friends" window still had me listed as playing the game.

but it is the worst case when we have to reboot PC. Sometimes it can take 10sec - 5 min to unfreeze. And in all of this cases NS2 is NOT showing us the the synchronization status! That is why I think that it is the point.
To prove all of this above, today I also got the freeze after quitting the NS2, but after a ~10 sec my mouse unfreezed, I immediately started the screen capture (via MSI Afterburner), and in the Friends list I was green like I was still in the game. Then in a few seconds later STEAM suddenly lost connection (to it's servers?), then connection was restored. And again, I didn't see that NS2 was syncing to Steam Cloud.
All that you can see in Youtube video.
I'll pass this along to a dev
I already have steam cloud sync turned off, so this isn't able to be used as a fix for me
Specs:
Windows 7 64 bit
AMD Radeon HD 7970
8GB RAM
Asus Pro Gen 3
i5 2500k, stable OC'ed
No idea what is causing it. Might try closing firefox before quitting.
click it and you will see "Apphang" info..
Need that. :)

We never see this. The only thing we see is that Steam still shows us in-game, however the game window has already closed.
Seconds later is when the lock-up happens, rendering us with no other option but to do a hard-shutdown.
Hmm... and nothing in the logs, right?
Metroid did you ever get that process monitor feedback?
Sorry, but no feedback on that problem yet (only a video above), there was no hangs up while ProcMon was running. I will try again to capture some info.
And yes, Nighttime is right, disabling the Cloud Sync not helps.
