So if you want to damage Kharaa with a Welder, you press E on them?

So what do I do if I want to weld the armory or prototype lab? Or show that I have a welder and can weld players without having to chase them down? And oops I accidentally picked up the gun instead of welding a marine or powernode.

This is actually how we played before welders were in the game. The only issue I see is with the armory. Maybe make the "use" key for the armory different? Like the "drop weapon" key, or the "evolve menu" key.

As for using the welder as a weapon, uh, who cares?

Before it was only for Marine armor, not structure repair. There are also 4 abilities tied to the Use key for Marines already.

Hilarity ensues when a Welder kill is made, my friends :)

You could do both, have a slot for the welder but also make it weld if you hold E on a damaged structure, armory and prototype lab can require the weapon slot method.

I'd like to see it like this
E (use) = Build (if no welder), Build/weld (if welder)
B (buy) = Buy from armory or protolab
3 = Switch to axe/welder for use in combat

I like that setup, it's less accident prone to key pressing (current hold E to build but also opens Buy Menu on Armory...)

+1 B for buy. Just make sure it shows up on screen as an option in big font for the new players. 'E' has become the default in everyones minds.

B for buy! It solves so many problems!

+1 for B to buy stuff. This solves a great deal of problems and it isn't actually that new. All counter strikes use B to open the menu screen as well (so even new players to NS that played cs before should feel right at home)

If you guys are still listening - I would make it so that no button is required when buying at an armory... Doom 3 style. When I first saw the prototype lab I even thought that was already implemented ... was not :(

PS : for everyone that has not played doom 3 : <a href="http://youtu.be/g4XYT4ZkzOk?t=14s" target="_blank">whenever you hover over a pc screen your crosshair is a curser.</a> It's really neat and immersive as there is no menu sprites popping up :)

I couldn't remember what doom 3 style was until you linked that. Much better idea. :D Have you posted that in the "Its done better..." thread?

Comm chair, armory and proto lab should all have this. Then the welder can either be merged into E as we said, or players will have to aim the welder away from screens to use it.

While we're on the conversation of removing unnecessary use key commands. The use key for pickup/swap weapon should be removed and just have the drop weapon key and autoweapon pickup, ala ns1.

No more accidental weapon swaps during opening a menu or building a structure. To pickup the gun on the ground just drop the gun in your hands and you'll pick up the new gun. Also it'd be nice if you could procure the ammo from fallen weapons like in ns1. So you don't have to keep swapping guns.

Its mostly annoying when you buy a shotgun, so your rifle drops. Then you buy some mines, so you instantly drop your shotgun for the original rifle :X

For all you guys moaning about too much bound to 'e' in NS2, just be glad you are not playing Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer:

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->The reality too is that, while the multiplayer content isn't terrible, it's hampered by the fact that combat simply isn't what Mass Effect does best. The controls, for example, are so streamlined that they can pose problems - with Run, Cover, Use and Vault all mapped to a single key. We've died more than a dozen times because of this control setup, with Shepard leaping over obstacles when we'd meant to take cover, or vice versa.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
