As for using the welder as a weapon, uh, who cares?

Before it was only for Marine armor, not structure repair. There are also 4 abilities tied to the Use key for Marines already.
Hilarity ensues when a Welder kill is made, my friends :)

I'd like to see it like this
E (use) = Build (if no welder), Build/weld (if welder)
B (buy) = Buy from armory or protolab
3 = Switch to axe/welder for use in combat

I like that setup, it's less accident prone to key pressing (current hold E to build but also opens Buy Menu on Armory...)
PS : for everyone that has not played doom 3 : <a href="http://youtu.be/g4XYT4ZkzOk?t=14s" target="_blank">whenever you hover over a pc screen your crosshair is a curser.</a> It's really neat and immersive as there is no menu sprites popping up :)

I couldn't remember what doom 3 style was until you linked that. Much better idea. :D Have you posted that in the "Its done better..." thread?
Comm chair, armory and proto lab should all have this. Then the welder can either be merged into E as we said, or players will have to aim the welder away from screens to use it.
No more accidental weapon swaps during opening a menu or building a structure. To pickup the gun on the ground just drop the gun in your hands and you'll pick up the new gun. Also it'd be nice if you could procure the ammo from fallen weapons like in ns1. So you don't have to keep swapping guns.

that would be amazing
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->The reality too is that, while the multiplayer content isn't terrible, it's hampered by the fact that combat simply isn't what Mass Effect does best. The controls, for example, are so streamlined that they can pose problems - with Run, Cover, Use and Vault all mapped to a single key. We've died more than a dozen times because of this control setup, with Shepard leaping over obstacles when we'd meant to take cover, or vice versa.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
