From the top of my head: Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Diablo 1+2, Battlefield 1942/Battlefield 2 and the entire Half-Life series (including most of its mods, one of them being NS1).
If you do a little research (via youtube or whatever) you'll find that there exists no standard for health placement on the HUD. Lower left/right (BF3), top left/right (Halo), center (Quake, Skyrim)... it's all over the place. But for NS2 I like the lower left and it is consistent with NS1.

For those that mentioned it, the health and armor bar has a bar + a value. The first screenshot just is in an wierd quality, you don't see it that well.
But i agree that it could need some more contrast. Having played with it, i really like it.

how do you feel about the position of the marine banners, and the transparency of the "weld" icons? i couldn't tell from the quality of the stream enough to make up my mind. (it was better than i hoped but i know things feel different irl)

I didn't notice the marine banners. But i wasn't in yesterdays playtest, but mondays, so that might be new. Looks indeed not perfect from the screenshot.
please remove that most annoying message "You Are Dead!". There is nothing more annoying as showing message about obvious thing and you will only piss up players by this.
Better will be the countdown to re-spawn / or message about queue when you will be in b.field again instead of give that negative information to the players.
please think about it a little bit (be positive - give promise that player will play soon, not the negative) ... this small thinks do a game better.

Also, is it intentional that you are supposed to be able to see the health circles on enemy players?

Don't worry about that. Don't forget that what you saw in the video is really a work in progress thing. I know for a fact that the "you are dead" text is just a placeholder. If it will be removed or replaced with a more interesting information, i don't know, but i know that you really don't have to worry :)
At first: I really like the new HUD in general. Nice that it got some love from the devs. But I share some of the critics in this thread.

The alien health was and is difficult to read in combat. The circles are to difficult to determine the health from. The numbers are to difficult to read and the max health change with every life form, makes it difficult to decide if I have to flee or I can fight on.

The messages for power going down etc. are not needed and if at all should be placed less distracting.

Much love for health circles around allied units feet, been missing that. Banners like that "YOU ARE NOW RESPAWNING" should probably be halfway up the screen so it's easily visible but doesn't obstruct your aim. All the space above and to the left of the minimap (or rather, moving it towards the centre of the screen to compensate) makes it get in the way too much. Text like location etc can be safely placed below/to the right of the minimap (nearer the centre of the screen), since text is easier to see through than a whole image. So... move it back, I guess.

yes, that's armor and it shrinks the less armor the unit has
From the first view i would also prefer the old HUD. The old blue colours give me a better feeling then the black ones... But have to see it ingame of course to get a serious opinion about it.

it is too busy with all the little icons & over messaging, but this is known. i would not call it horrific :) as a UI technology & layout I'm ok with it actually.
as for the health bar positioning, wouldnt an overall screen cue (tinting or something - audio cues as well) be effective in addressing the need to know you're almost dead in the heat of action.
when you're in between action, glancing at the bars for the particulars is no big deal.

soo so far what i get from people complaining is alien new hud is good except font on the health is too big or the circle needs to be bigger to fit it.
marine hud needs to be blue not grayish blue, minimap needs to be clearer and possibly put back to the right side, also the health/armor bars need a little tweeking. also help messages need to be moved from the centre to some where else. other than that new hud is good. also your dead is a place holder lol i agree with all of this. just wonder what others think
I like it, though I agree minimap may be a tad too large. Also not entirely sold on the death blood thingy
Also, is it just me or did they change the marine ESP so that it no longer shows approaching skulks on the minimap like it used to? (without a marine or orbs spotting them)
I'm a big fan of the new HUD for marines. I have some minor complaints that the other members have already expressed. ie: minimap should be on the top right banner for power nodes being destroyed should be less intrusive (smaller banner? placement of banner?)
HUD for Aliens is nice, simple and to the point. My only complaint for alien HUD has also already been expressed: The numbers and circle to display health are a little difficult to read. A change in font color or something simple could fix this.
The icons for unpowered buildings are great but somewhat distracting in areas with large concentrations of buildings. But otherwise, very informative/helpful.
Speaking of unpowered buildings, an unrelated concern. The borders of where you are able to build. Some powered rooms have areas where buildings are unpowered: ie: Flight Control, directly north of the extractor there is a power-blind-spot.
also powered room boundaries should be more distinguishable or more accurate. ie: Building in the Hallway between Logistics and Repair Room. On top of the stairs the room is powered by the Logistics Power node. The stairs and below are Powered by the Repair Room Power Node.
