For the passed two days when trying to play I get this error. Can anyone help me out, or am I just being stupid and missing something obvious?

Right click on the game in steam and select VERIFY FILES or something of the like and see how you go

Then you might want to provide more information. System specs, internet stats, router, whether you've restarted Steam and verified your files yet.
See IronHorse's sig for trivia.

It's a Steam problem, not an NS2 one. Happens every now and then to me with random games (even purely single player ones... it's pretty stupid). Restarting Steam usually fixes it for me.

If a restart doesn't help, delete the clientregistry.blob and lauch steam.
