A little story...
Now children a little story i have to tell...

Today, an epic battle on Nancy finish with a total running time of almost five hours.

Act1. It started off as a normal match, the aliens were quick to take a lot of resource points and the marines slowly spreading out from the spawn. The marines quickly continued to the Mess Hall whilst the aliens were very speedy in getting the second and third hives up. Unfortunately, the marines only managed to get as far as the Mess Hall when they came under extreme attack from Fades and . By this time the Mess Hall was filled with lots of to block the from attacking. Our commander (who is the most experienced commander i've ever seen), had gotten armour and heavy weapons research at this stage. We were attacking structures with a load of placed in the Mess Hall. By this time, it was almost impossible to walk about in the Mess Hall due to the large number of turrets in there. Our commander took the risk of constantly attacking the Mess Hall whilst leaving our base relatively undefended. Unfortunately, our base was overrun, because the majority of the marines where in the Mess Hall defending the turrets and wielding for their lives. Our base was overrun and everything was destoryed... end of act 1.

Act 2. The commander resumed this command from another console build in the Mess Hall. Now the Mess Hall was our base, if this fell we were done for. The aliens continued their assault, taking the resource points in our original base and building a lot of defensive structures there. The Frontiersmen knew they had to take a hive or die. They decided to continue their assault into the Mother Interface, taking the RP and building a lot of turrets and to cripple the Subspace Array Hive. This assault continued for about 20mins until the stopped firing, then the marines moved in. Destorying the hive, the marines set up camp- they werent gonna let them take this hive back. The aliens continued to attack the Mess Hall, but now from a new direction. The Airlock Exchange route was undefended since it used to be a route from the marines old base to the Mess Hall. However the aliens how controlled this zone and continued to attack from behind us. The fades did a great job crippling us with wave after wave of acid bombs that took most of us out. Marines built structures in the Subspace array whilst aliens assaulted the Mess Hall. After a fine effort from the Marines, the Mess Hall was on the verge of collapse. The commander decided enough was enough and moved camp. The Mess Hall fell... end of Act 2

Act 3. The Subspace Array was now the last hope. The marines all got kitted up with Heavy Armour and HMG's, grenade lauchers and wielders. The marines had one resource point, put together with the resources that were derived from recycled structures in the Mess Hall. The marines held out whilst the aliens took over the whole station. Soldiers fired vollys of grenades into the Subspace Array entrance, holding back any form of attack. Vents were well guarded. Tensions were running high, some soldiers started to argue with the commander, words were exchanged and doubt threatened to weaken our resolve. Alas, the marines held out whilst our resources slowly trickled upwards. and held back any attackers whilst all the marines were being kitted up and upgraded. The time to assault dawned. The marines broke through to recapture the Mother Interface resource point. Our frontline was segmented which meant aliens leaked through the cracks. A lot of marines died at this point. We rebuild the Mother Interface area, were then able to attack structures in the Mess Hall. The marines finally moved forward after the stopped firing, to recapture the Mess Hall. Turrets were built in there, but not to the extent that the marines had build it before. Some marines stayed to protect the Mess Hall whilst others moved outward from the Subspace Array to the crew quarters corridor. Turret factories were built in the crew quarters and we used the turret creep tactic where, once sieges stop firing, move forward, build another turret factory and continue to build turrets. On this front we slowly moved moved towards the Port Engine Hive.

The Mess Hall was under constant attack from dare devil and some sneaky Fades. Once or twice the turret factory was destoryed, which caused a lot of hair raising moments. The commander fortified the Mess Hall area whilst pressing forward on the Port Engine assault. The siege tactic was working, and soon we were in Auxillary Command their hive. The aliens made a strong effort attacking us, but the turrets did most of the work. This hive was captured and together with its resource points. It was now just a matter of time.

The nameless hive was now on the attack list. Turrets were set up in the Auxillary Generators attack the hive area. Strangly, the Airlock Exchange area was being defended with lots of sensory array, which the marines destoryed with ease. Structures were cleared in the Crew Locker area. Once the hive was down, the alien bug hunt commenced. Marines win.

This stop being a game a long time ago. This was WAR.

Apart from the odd spammer, loads of arguments and some upsets, this was the best NS match I have played in. It took a very long time, finishing about 0700 GMT (started at about 0200 GMT). GG.

    Great story there

Sounds like it was a fun game you had there!

That is the longest game i have heard of. Sounds like you really played it out like it was meant to be played. Most of the games I play either as a marine or commander seem to be about a 45 - hour game...and i can't decided which seems to be better. chuckles

It was definately a very long match. Towards the 3 hour mark some people began to get tired and moan. Others continued because they wanted a conclusion. I remember one person saying, "I only came on for a quick game".

Great story! Good to hear a 'marines win' game once and a while (but as you pointed out, it was all due to the ability of the commander. sounds like he really new what he was doing and did it well).

^Most experienced commander you have ever seen?
And he let the aliens get 3 hives, while he was still in the messhall?

Sometimes the aliens are just too good for them not to get 3 hives. It might not be the commanders fault but the grunts.

Sounds like a great game. I remember playing and game that lasted 2 1/2 hours, but 5 hours damn! My hands were hurting after 2 1/2 hours of button mashings. Your hands must have been numb.

Great story Hokushin, The aliens probably even had fun too. Sounds like you had a really excellent Comm. I wish more games in NS were like that.

One time I was on marines, and our spawn fell but we had a full base at one hive with a spare CC in it, yet as soon as our first base fell all sorts of people on my team started saying things like "**obscenity** this, we're screwed" and half the marine team left, just like that. We set up in the hive and held the aliens off for a while but we were outnumbered the rest of the game and could make a comeback liek you did.

i thought i would be the only one to think that.

as a general rule, i believe that the more experienced commanders are the ones that push out of spawn very quickly, grab a hive (if possible) and get motion tracking over armor... :-/

i'd have died if the game had lasted that long...

Are aliens only motion tracked when within range of an observatory, or does it just light up all the hives and movine aliens on the maps? I've played games where both seem to be true.

Maybe there should be a "Battle stories" forum where people can tell others about the better games they've played.

Aliens can't cloak within range of an observatory. Motion tracking applied to all moving aliens and all hives.
  • HokushinHokushin Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 3990Members
It wasnt the fault of the commander that the aliens got three hives before we got to the mess hall. Unfortunately, not all the marines were following commands that well. I believe that this commander was the best because inspite of the problems of the marines not following commands, he still pulled it out of the bag. It is definately hard being a commander on a public. BTW this commander has not lost one game in 25 commands... not bad.
