I'll manage it
I have experience hosting tournaments so let's host one.
What would I need?
A target date (Or a few dates. Could make it a weekend tournament. Would need to know at least a month in advanced)
A bunch of teams to register and commit to games. (I think 8 would be optimal for a small double elimination tournament)
People to volunteer servers. (I don't have any)
A generally accepted rule of play (Which is already in use for scrims)
A map selection (or number of maps)
The tournament will be free. I have no interest in getting money involved at all as that will add an extra layer of complications. There will be no prize besides bragging rights. I will use Challonge! as a bracket system.
If people are serious about this let me know. I'll come up with a name.
We also may have to separate Euro and North American teams because of ping issues. Two different tournaments can be held.
Lastly, I have no issue waiting for the game to be at 1.0 status. I understand there are beta challenges right now.
Based on how this goes we will develop a league.

But...
Just hold.
Maybe a "King of the beta" close release tournament. Lets say in 1,5 -2 month would be possible.
Too bad the community is quite far away from having 8 active teams or a number of competitively playable maps.
How about this, if any clan leaders see this, please send me your contact info and we can coordinate off list. I will try to contact as many as I can. At the least we can establish a relationship.
I think building the competetive gaming infrastructure still starts from having teams and players willing to compete. Building up tournaments can further boost the activity and count of the teams and players, but it requires some starting momentum to get the things up and running properly.
I think any tournament you can keep together is a great benefit for the community, but pulling things off isn't going to be easy and running a half proper tournament can backfire. Unless there's a huge list of active teams signing up for the tournament, I'd maybe start with 3-4 teams max once in a week or two and then expand it from there once you've got things running.
Wait until mid-august, and try again then. If activity hasn't picked up by then, you'll have to wait until release.
To be entirely honest, I fear this game will never get a reasonably sized playerbase, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Hopefully it won't be the case.
At least thats what i hope.
And exo need to be balanced. This take 2-3 builds normally.
For some tournaments, such as Hockey Tournaments, they will create teams just for that specific tournament. Perhaps this would be a good system. If we can get enough of a pool of players together (based on a simple draft or randomization system) then we can generate unique teams.
From what I see, I believe there are enough players that want to compete or at least would be interested in playing in a tournament. The issue however may be that there aren't enough organized teams in existence right now.
Perhaps we can try to setup a website where people can register specifically for certain tournaments, then be assigned a team, and given the opportunity to play with this team for a few weeks.
I believe that would be better than doing random mixes and calling it a tournament.
The chance of no-shows is generally alot higher when you don't have an established team.
And it would most likely end up in walkover after walkover. Nothing to play, nothing to view.
