Confusion over hardware specs

I'm usually knowledgeable on this kind of stuff, but here I'm not quite sure. The recommended specs say core 2 duo 3 ghz. Now I have a feeling it has less to do with the core 2 duo, and more to do with the 3ghz. I say this because I have an i7 quad core, which is better than a core 2 duo (I know that much at least). However it only has a 2ghz clock speed, and I get unplayable performance.

So is the power of my machine completely wasted because this game needs nothing but clock speed?

Currently the C2D @ 3Ghz also don't run the game smoothly, the recommended specs are v1.0 related

It's single-threaded computing-power, so yes it is a function of cycle-effectiveness and the amount of cycles it does (on a given core). 1266-i7's cycles are worth more than Core2's, Sandybridges are worth more than 1266-i7's, IvyBridges are worth (negligibly) more than Sandybridges. This all being a severe over-simplification of course, but you get the idea.

The best of these still remains the Sandybridges due to their awesome overclocking-potential (outweighing what little IvyBridges offer in terms of cycle-effectiveness, and severely lack in clock-speed).

I'm actually curious to see how the game will run on Pentium 4 @ 4GHz

    Not so good, because cycle-effectiveness.

That CPU is about 3 or 4 generation too old vs C2D's I assume. I've got an AMD Thunderbird 1400Mhz laying around somewhere, it probably wouldn't even boot NS2 with it's Geforce 3 64Mb VRAM (lack of shader support as well), this one is probably about 15 generations too old
