True. Although it's a nice touch from a design's point of view, it is quite counter productive to the player. Maybe have an option to turn that blur off? Or even better, remove the blur and make the map a little bit transparent?

Removing hive sight was the exact opposite, but hopefully it will be better when they replace it.

Fantastic write up, fana. Though i couldn't imagine relying on the commander so much for information.. comp games sure, but pub games? No way.. getting commanders to communicate at all can sometimes be like pulling teeth. And while i agree that the map is too effective, with the biggest culprit being "d) An indicator showing you which friendly structures are under attack" .. (remember infestation giving hivesight?) I am not sure if there is a solution or workaround for this.. as you do need to know when somethings under attack, hell we even have large banners for some instances, but it sooo effective at communicating where to position yourself that it removes some weight off the commander's shoulder. idk..
I say Arkanti's idea might be the best: Just put the full map on the minimap, and utilize hivesight for aliens.

Mini-map is absolutely useless except for one thing, which is Feign Death, which also needs some reworking. Otherwise using the regular map is so much more effective. Might sound dumb but it gives an unbelievable wealth of information throughout the game, and I doubt even with hive sight in NS2 that anyone didn't use the map over it.
Doesn't make much sense to me having a great tool that dramatically increases readibility/accessibility at our fingertips and then making it frustrating to use to 'balance' it. C map is a unique game feature that should really be embraced imo, instead of adding random blurs and shifting stuff into progress bar and CC/hive icon wallhacks.
Is it because of immersion and realism? - Remember that marines have huds and aliens are innately tied to hivemind.
Is it to make the C map more readable? - Doesn't do this at all.
Is it to discourage C map usage? - Ridiculously bad design to discourage usage of something by making it cause epileptic seizures if used what is mandated by god as 'too often'.
I also use the map frequently, but it doesn't bother me at all! It's not like I have it on during combat, I only look at it briefly before I start my 'journey'.
the blur is indeed a bit annoying, because you wan't to be moving around when looking at it, else it will be a waste of time. the blur just makes it harder.
Imo they should adjust the marine HUD to look more like the actual marine helmet visor.
At the moment it doesn't feel like you look through the visor at all. The HUD should look like it is projected in front of the eyes of the marine (with this nice blue light), and so should the map, because I always feel like I pull out a real paper map and hold it right in front of me.
I agree with Fana that you shouldn't be able to see enemies that are seen by players though.
