Not sure if this has been suggested before, but the following ideas came to me:
Allow gorges to spend pres on upgrading eggs with higher lifeforms (much like what the com is doing right now), but on the field.
Allow ruptured cysts (manually done by the alien com) to spray a parasite-like effect on nearby marines, marking them on the map.
