Yes you pre ordered it much later. It was 20$ for the normal and 40$ for the pre order back in pre alpha, then once beta was opened they changed it so preoders were 35$.
When I bought the black armor edition of NS2 I wasn't even sure if it would even come out. I bought it because I was too young to donate to the constellation program while I was playing NS1.

If you haven't added the separate armour code, then armour stays green.
Oh, and if I'm incorrect, please say so. This is how I remember it from years back, and I don't have access to my Steam right now!<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I just checked this (while i was looking up the date that i preordered). The black armor was included in the Special Edition, so no additional key.
edit: No, i am wrong. There are seperate keys (in fact i have 3 different keys). If i remember it correctly, the first key was an internal one used by UWE. The second one was the "standard" NS2 key for Steam and the third one was for upgrading NS2 to the Special Edition (and Black Armor).
So, if you didn't activate the Special Edition key, the armor probably would stay green.
