There are a few really simple solutions.
1. Give the gorge the ability to recycle hydras that are full hp.
2. Allow hydras to cost zero res if the hydra is replaces has full hp.
3. Allow gorges to move hydras.
I think any one of these would really make hydras perfect in terms of cost and reward.
